What features does Meld offer for file and folder comparison?
Updated
Meld is a visual diff and merge tool for comparing files, directories, and version-controlled projects. It provides two- and three-way comparison of both files and directories, and supports several popular version control systems. If you need to review code changes, understand patches, or work through a merge, the features below are what Meld gives you.
File comparison
Meld's file comparison is built around a live, editable view rather than a read-only report.
- Live comparison updates — Compare, edit, and merge files while the comparison updates as you work.
- Change navigation — Move between changes and operate on change blocks directly, so you can accept or reject chunks instead of retyping them.
- Simple text filtering — Ignore irrelevant differences (for example, whitespace or comment noise) so the meaningful changes stand out.
- Three-way merge assistance — Handles conflicts and displays the base version, which is what you need when merging two sets of edits against a common ancestor.
This matters when you are resolving a merge you have been putting off: the base version display and conflict handling give you the context to decide which side wins.
Folder comparison
Directory comparison is where Meld helps you see the state of a whole tree, not just one file.
- Identify and manage missing or modified files across folders.
- Drill down into a file comparison from the folder view for a detailed look at differences.
- Ignore certain files or folders so comparisons focus on what you care about.
A typical use: comparing a working directory against a backup or a deployed copy to find which files drifted.
Version control support
Meld integrates with version control rather than replacing it.
- Supported systems: Git, Mercurial, Bazaar, and Subversion.
- Check your changes, commit, and push from within the tool.
- View and manage version control states.
- Tool integration, for example as
git mergetool.

| Windows | Download the installer |
| macOS | Not officially supported; semi-official builds via Homebrew, MacPorts, or Fink |
Requirements listed by the project: Python 3.6, GTK+ 3.22, GLib 2.36, PyGObject 3.36, GtkSourceView 4.0, and pycairo. The current stable release noted is Meld 3.24.0 (20 June 2026). Meld does not yet support automatic updates or portable installs.
Choosing Meld for your task
- Pick Meld if you want a graphical, editable diff and merge tool that covers files, folders, and version control in one place, and you are on Linux or Windows.
- Be cautious on macOS — builds exist but are semi-official and may have issues with recent macOS versions.
- If you only need command-line diffs, Meld's value is in the visual, interactive comparison and merge assistance, not in replacing
diffitself.
