What Features Does Special K Offer for PC Games?

Updated

Special K is a PC gaming utility that bundles several tools into one package: an advanced FPS limiter with automatic VRR optimization, real-time latency and display output analysis, latency and performance improvements for Direct3D 11 games in borderless window mode, and HDR screenshot capture in formats including JPEG-XR, JPEG-XL, AVIF and PNG. It is best known for fixing and enhancing graphics, its detailed performance analysis and correction mods, and a growing set of tools for a wide variety of PC game issues. Most of its features and overrides work in most games.

Core Performance and Display Tools

Advanced FPS limiter with automatic VRR optimization

The limiter is designed to produce consistent frame pacing, and it adjusts automatically for variable refresh rate displays. This matters when a game's own limiter produces uneven pacing or interacts poorly with VRR.

Real-time latency and display output analysis

Special K provides live analysis of latency and display output so you can validate whether VRR is behaving correctly and fix it when it isn't. Use this when you suspect VRR isn't engaging or when input latency feels inconsistent.

Borderless window mode improvements (Direct3D 11)

For Direct3D 11 games, Special K aims to reduce latency and improve performance when running in borderless window mode — useful if you prefer borderless but have found it slower than exclusive fullscreen.

HDR screenshots

Capture HDR screenshots in JPEG-XR, JPEG-XL, AVIF or PNG, with configurable compression quality and in-game snipping.

Bundled Applications

Application What it does
SKIF (Special K Injection Frontend) Ultra light-weight launcher for Steam, Epic, Xbox and GOG that can bypass Steam's forced patching and Microsoft Store inconveniences; integrates with Special K's ValvePlug project (a Steam Input kill-switch)
SKIV (Special K Image Viewer) Portable HDR image viewer with screen capture/snipping, tonemapping and analysis, plus decode/encode/transcode for JPEG-XR, JPEG-XL, AVIF, Radiance HDR, OpenEXR, UltraHDR and PNG; runs on Linux via Proton for all formats except Microsoft's patented JPEG-XR

Stable vs. Experimental Builds

Special K ships in two versions. The stable build is updated roughly every 6 months. The experimental build introduces new features and fixes before they reach stable, and active development and releases happen on the Discord server. If you hit an issue on stable, the site suggests trying the experimental version, since the fix may already be there.

To opt into experimental from stable:

  1. Launch SKIF.exe.
  2. Open the ⚙ Settings tab.
  3. Change "Check for updates to Special K" to "Discord (updates regularly)."

If a new version exists, it downloads automatically in the background (~10 MB), and SKIF prompts you to install it when finished.

Is It the Right Fit?

Special K suits players who want finer control over frame pacing, VRR behavior, borderless performance and HDR capture than a game's own settings provide. If you only need a simple frame cap or don't use VRR or HDR, the extra tooling may be more than you need. Start with the stable build; switch to experimental only if you encounter a problem stable hasn't addressed.
