What features does Xreveal offer?

Xreveal is a Windows application that removes DVD and Blu-ray playback restrictions automatically in the background. Its core value is that it works on-the-fly: as soon as a movie disc is inserted, Xreveal transparently enables read access to the disc's contents, so the disc becomes usable to Windows and to any program on your computer without a manual decryption step. It is aimed at Windows users who want to play, back up, or otherwise work with DVD, Blu-ray, and UHD discs without region or user-prohibition barriers.

Automatic background operation

Xreveal runs in the background and activates when a disc is inserted. There is no need to launch a separate decryption pass or wait for a conversion step before the disc is readable. Because the decryption happens transparently, the operating system and all installed programs see the disc as a normally readable volume.

On-the-fly decryption without disk storage

Decryption is performed on-the-fly, meaning Xreveal does not need to store decrypted data onto your hard disk to make the disc usable. This matters if you want to watch or access a disc immediately, or if you want to avoid consuming drive space with a full intermediate copy.

Region code and user prohibition removal

Xreveal can optionally remove region codes, making a movie region free so it can be viewed on any DVD/Blu-ray player and with any DVD/Blu-ray playback software. It also removes user prohibitions — the restrictions that normally block certain actions on a disc. Region removal is described as optional, so it is a setting you can choose rather than a forced behavior.

Disc backup and integrity verification

Beyond playback, Xreveal supports working with disc contents directly:

  • Backup disc as ISO or folder — create a disc image or a folder-based copy of the disc contents.
  • Verify the integrity of Blu-ray M2TS files, including decrypted M2TS files, so you can check that the stream files are intact.
  • Change ISO file volume label — rename the volume label of an existing ISO file.

Platform and interface details

Xreveal runs natively on Windows x64, x86, and arm64 devices, from Windows XP through the latest Windows 11. The required hard drive space is 5 MB. A dark mode is available for the interface.

What's new in version 3.0.0

The 3.0.0 release (2026-09-18) added and fixed several items relevant to the features above:

  • Added an option to read from my discs.
  • Added the ability to specify the interval to check for updates.
  • Added automatic closing of tabs after a hash match.
  • Added rescan functionality next to eject/load when right-clicking the drive menu.
  • Fixed content hash errors during decrypt to folder.
  • Fixed a calculated BUP offset for VTS #0 that did not match the one in the IFO header.
  • Added support for java protection (MOCKINGJAY_PT1).

A 3.0.0.1 beta followed on 2026-09-20, and a 3.0.0.2 beta on 2026-09-25. A separate Blu-ray playback plugin for VLC and Kodi (v1.5.1) was released 2026-09-24.

Choosing based on your needs

If your goal is simply to make an inserted disc readable to your existing playback software, the background, on-the-fly behavior is the relevant feature. If you want a permanent copy, the ISO/folder backup plus M2TS integrity verification are the features to use. If region locking or disc-level user prohibitions are the obstacle, region code and user prohibition removal address that directly. All of these run on the Windows versions listed above with only 5 MB of disk space required.
