What Game Modes and Settings Does Memorize Earth Offer?

Updated

Memorize Earth offers eight board modes — Standard Board, New Stuff Only, Type Only, Globe Mode, Presidents Mode, Drill Weak Spots, Flag Drill, and God Mode — plus a settings panel for sound, distraction, auto-advance, alternate names, and family-friendly text. You choose a mode from the mode selector before starting a new board; settings save as you change them, but category filter changes only take effect on your next New Board.

The eight game modes

Mode What it does Best for
Standard Board The default Jeopardy-style board; pick a tile, take the clue, clear the board General practice across all categories
New Stuff Only Surfaces questions you haven't seen yet First passes through a category
Type Only Answer by typing rather than selecting Testing recall without recognition cues
Globe Mode Map-based questions Learning locations, not just names
Presidents Mode U.S. presidents focus A single-topic session
Drill Weak Spots Targets questions you keep getting wrong Fixing persistent gaps
Flag Drill Flag-focused questions A lighter, faster warm-up
God Mode The hardest setting When standard boards feel too easy

A few practical notes from the site itself: the game warns that it is "designed to be EXTREMELY difficult" and that a perfect score won't come for a while. It also suggests flag drills as a friendlier starting point. If you're new, start with Flag Drill or New Stuff Only, then move to Standard Board once you have some coverage.

Settings that change how a session feels

Open Settings from the board. Changes save as you make them.

  • Sound effects — turn audio on or off.
  • Allow #@$%&! words — when off, you get family-friendly text plus "a single tame wrong-answer sound."
  • Distraction Mode — adds interference while you answer.
  • Slap Me When I'm Wrong — a stronger wrong-answer signal.
  • Auto-Advance — moves you to the next question automatically.
  • Alternate Names — accepts alternative answers for place names.

For a focused solo session, keep sound on and distraction off. For a shared or family setting, turn off cursing and consider leaving Auto-Advance on to keep pace.

Category filters and when they apply

The Categories filter limits the board to specific categories. Each category shows three numbers — mastered · learning · unseen / total — so you can see where you stand before choosing. Use Select All or Clear All to reset the selection quickly.

Important: category changes apply on your next New Board, not the current one. If you filter to, say, flags and capitals, finish or abandon the current board and start a new one to see the effect.

Progress controls you should know about

Two reset actions sit in Settings, and they do different things:

  • Reset Question History clears which questions you've seen so old ones can resurface. Your memory and category stats stay.
  • Forget Everything wipes all progress — mastery, settings, everything — and cannot be undone.

There's also a Disconnect Cloud Sync option if you want to stop syncing progress. Use Reset Question History when you want variety back; reserve Forget Everything for a genuine fresh start.

A sensible first session

  1. Open Settings and turn off cursing if others will be watching.
  2. Pick Flag Drill for a low-pressure warm-up.
  3. Start a New Board and work through it; wrong answers feed the weak-spot tracking.
  4. Switch to Drill Weak Spots on your next session to clean up misses.
  5. Once flags feel solid, move to Standard Board and let the category numbers guide which topics to filter next.

The board tracks mastery over time in the same browser, so consistency matters more than any single run.
