What Generative Art and Photography Does Noah Doersing Share?

Updated

Noah Doersing makes generative art with software and hardware, and shares bird and other photography on a separate site called Rarefied Pixels. His personal site, noahdoersing.com, presents both interests alongside his open-source projects, blog, and CV. The generative art appears directly on the site as an animation at the top of the page, while the photography lives on its own dedicated website.

Generative art

According to the site, Doersing creates generative art "using software & hardware." The homepage itself serves as a live example: an animation at the top of the page is described as generative art.

His projects section shows how this interest connects to practical tools. One example is osm2svg4art (2025), a single-page application that:

  • Takes an address as input
  • Retrieves nearby roads and paths from OpenStreetMap via its Overpass API
  • Converts them into a color-coded SVG representation
  • Produces output ready to be plotted on an AxiDraw pen plotter

The tool was originally built for #ptpx2024, a pen plotter postcard exchange. The site notes it was used to plot postcards from its output, and the project page includes a photo of the tool running on a laptop next to one of the plotted postcards.

This project is a useful illustration of how his generative art works in practice: code and data (map geometry) feed a physical output device (the plotter), rather than staying purely on screen.

Photography

Doersing takes photographs of birds "(& other stuff)" and shares them on a website he calls Rarefied Pixels. The site does not describe the contents of Rarefied Pixels in more detail, so the photography collection itself is best explored directly there.

Photography also feeds into his other work. His Rammertblick project combines walking, photography, coding, web design, and local history into a directory of things to see in the Rammert, a forested hill range in Southern Germany. The project page includes a photograph of an ancient stone culvert deep in the Rammert, along with a note that a tick (and borrelia bacteria) hitched a ride during the shoot, requiring antibiotics a month later. The project is pending release, with a landing/teaser page already live and a possible publication as a static site under an open license around mid-2026.
