What HID Device Modes, XInput Mode, and DS4 Mode Mean in Nefarius Documentation
Updated
HID device modes, XInput mode, and DS4 mode describe how a PlayStation controller is presented to Windows after DsHidMini or BthPS3 takes it over. HID device modes are the raw presentation options: the controller appears as a standard HID gamepad, and games read it through DirectInput or raw HID. XInput mode makes the same controller appear as an Xbox 360-style pad so games that only speak XInput accept it. DS4 mode presents it as a DualShock 4, which keeps Sony-specific behavior such as the light bar, rumble, and touchpad available to games and tools that expect a real DS4. Pick the mode based on what your game or emulator can read, not on which one sounds newest.
The three modes at a glance
| Mode | What Windows sees | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| HID device mode | A generic HID gamepad | DirectInput games, tools that read raw HID reports | No XInput-only game support, limited Sony-specific features |
| XInput mode | An Xbox 360-compatible pad | Most modern PC games and launchers | Sony-specific features like the touchpad are not exposed the same way |
| DS4 mode | A DualShock 4 | Games and emulators with native DS4 support | Requires the game or tool to actually understand DS4 input |
DsHidMini documents these modes directly, including a dedicated HID Device Modes Explained page and separate DS4 Mode and XInput Mode user guides. The mode is a property of the driver's presentation, so changing it changes what every application on the system sees, not just one game.
HID device modes
HID device modes are the baseline. The controller enumerates as a HID device and reports its inputs through HID report descriptors. This is the layer that research pages such as the SIXAXIS/DualShock 3 native HID Report Descriptor document, because the descriptor defines exactly which bytes carry which button, axis, or sensor value.
Use a HID device mode when:
- Your game or emulator reads DirectInput or raw HID input.
- You are debugging or reverse-engineering what the controller actually sends.
- You want the most direct path with the fewest translation layers.
The cost is compatibility: a game that only accepts XInput will not see the controller in a plain HID mode.
XInput mode
XInput mode wraps the controller so Windows and games treat it as an Xbox 360 controller. This is the mode to choose when a game lists Xbox controller support but ignores your PlayStation pad.
DsHidMini covers XInput mode in its own user guide, and the SCP XInput Bridge is documented as a way to route SIXAXIS.SYS input into that XInput presentation. If you are moving from the older SCP setup, the documentation includes a guide for switching from SIXAXIS.SYS to DsHidMini.
Use XInput mode when:
- A game or launcher only recognizes Xbox controllers.
- You want consistent button mapping across many titles.
- You do not need DS4-specific features in that game.
DS4 mode
DS4 mode presents the controller as a DualShock 4. This matters when a game or emulator has native DS4 handling and you want the light bar, rumble, or touchpad to behave as the game expects.
DsHidMini splits this across versions: V2 has a DS4 Mode User Guide, and V3 has a DS4Windows Mode User Guide. The documentation also notes that DS4Windows Mode is a distinct presentation, so do not assume V2 and V3 DS4 behavior is identical.
Use DS4 mode when:
- Your game or emulator supports DualShock 4 natively.
- You need the touchpad or light bar.
- You are pairing with tools that expect a DS4 device.
Related settings that change behavior
Mode choice is not the only variable. Two other documented controls affect how the controller behaves:
- Output rate control. DsHidMini documents Output Rate Control Explained for both V2 and V3. This governs how often the controller reports, which can affect responsiveness and stability.
- Bluetooth compatibility. BthPS3 documents controller compatibility and compatible Bluetooth devices. If your adapter is not on the compatible list, mode selection will not fix a connection problem.
How to choose
- Identify what your target game or emulator reads: XInput, DirectInput/raw HID, or native DS4.
- Match the mode: XInput mode for XInput-only titles, HID device mode for DirectInput or raw HID, DS4 mode for native DS4 support.
- Check the version-specific guide, since DsHidMini V2 and V3 document their modes separately.
- If the controller does not connect at all, check BthPS3 compatibility before changing modes.
