What is Aleph One at alephone.lhowon.org?

Updated

Aleph One is the open-source continuation of Bungie's Marathon 2 game engine, distributed at alephone.lhowon.org. It runs natively on macOS, Windows, and Linux, and supports the full Marathon trilogy — Marathon, Marathon 2, and Marathon Infinity — along with many community-made scenarios and net maps. The site is the project's home for engine downloads, documentation links, and community resources. The latest release listed on the page is 1.11.1 (2026-09-30).

What the engine actually is

Aleph One is not a new game. It is the engine that powers the original Marathon games, kept alive and extended by volunteers after Bungie stopped developing it. The project is licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL), and the source code is available for download from the site.

That distinction matters if you are deciding whether to use it:

  • If you want to play Marathon — Aleph One is the way to run the trilogy on modern systems.
  • If you want to build on the engine — the GPL license and public source code let you modify and redistribute it, subject to the license terms.
  • If you want Bungie's new Marathon game — that is a separate product; the site points to marathonthegame.com for it.

The Marathon trilogy it runs

The three games are included in what Aleph One supports, and each has a different character:

Game What it offers
Marathon The original — a fight for survival against the Pfhor, an alien race attacking your colony ship. The starting point for story fans.
Marathon 2: Durandal A popular single-player campaign, with updated graphics from the XBLA remake. You and other survivors hunt for an ancient ally to topple the Pfhor empire.
Marathon Infinity Forces you to rewrite history to prevent the destruction of the universe. Most multiplayer online matches are played with Infinity.

If you are following the story, the site recommends starting with the first game and working forward.

Online play

Multiplayer supports up to 8 players in matches or co-op. All multiplayer games are peer-to-peer, working over a LAN or — if the host is configured properly — over the Internet.

Two things make finding games easier:

  • A global matchmaking lobby built into Aleph One, where you can find and chat with other players.
  • An optional lhowon.org account, which lets you track your play history and compete for a spot on the monthly leaderboards. Signing up is optional; the lobby itself is part of the engine.

The site links to instructions for joining or hosting games online, which is worth reading before your first attempt, since peer-to-peer hosting depends on the host's network configuration.

Beyond the trilogy: community scenarios

The engine powers dozens of community-made games, ranging from new levels to total conversions with new weapons, monsters, and storylines set inside and outside the Marathon universe. The site maintains a list of major scenarios you can browse, and you download the Aleph One engine to play them.

This is the main reason the project has stayed active: the engine is a platform, not just a re-release.

Practical notes

  • Platforms: macOS, Windows, Linux.
  • License: GNU GPL; source code downloadable.
  • Hosting: alephone.lhowon.org is hosted by lhowon.org and mirrored at aleph-one-marathon.github.io.
  • Trademarks: Bungie, Destiny, and Marathon logos are trademarks or registered trademarks of Bungie, Inc., used with permission. Aleph One is not an official Bungie product.

If your goal is simply to play the Marathon games on a current computer, download the engine from this site and start with the first game. If your goal is to play online, set up or join through the matchmaking lobby, and consider an lhowon.org account if you want leaderboard tracking.
