What is Applio?

Updated

Applio is a free, open-source AI voice conversion suite that lets you turn any audio into another voice, train custom voice models from your own recordings, and change your voice live in real time. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux as a desktop app or classic Gradio WebUI, and is also available in the cloud. It is MIT licensed, requires no account, and collects no telemetry. If you want to create AI covers, build a custom voice, or experiment with real-time voice changing without paying for or trusting a closed service, Applio is built for exactly that.

What Applio actually does

The suite ships with six core tools, all centered on audio and voice work:

Feature What it does
Voice Conversion Converts any audio into another voice using ready-made models; supports pitch tuning, cleaning, upscaling, and batch processing
Real-Time Voice Change Low-latency live inference for songs, streams, and calls
Model Training Trains your own voice from a dataset through pre-processing, extraction, training, and export
Voice Blender Blends multiple voice models into one new voice, with control over each contributor
Text-to-Speech Generates speech from text and runs it through your voice models
Audio Analyzer Checks dataset audio health and readiness before training

The practical takeaway: you can go from a single cover to a fully custom voice using one toolset, rather than stitching together separate converters, trainers, and analyzers.

How you get from zero to a first conversion

Applio's own workflow is three steps:

  1. Get Applio — Download the standalone Desktop app or the classic Gradio WebUI.
  2. Pick or train a voice — Use community-shared voice models, or train your own from your own audio datasets.
  3. Convert your audio — Transform songs, speech, or microphone input with high fidelity and real-time inference.

There is also a Playground for testing conversions and a model search for finding community voices, so you can try the conversion step before committing to training anything.

Who it fits, and who should look elsewhere

Applio is a good fit if you:

  • Want an open, auditable tool with no accounts, paywalls, or telemetry
  • Need voice conversion, training, and real-time inference in one place
  • Plan to use, modify, or redistribute the software — including for commercial work, since the MIT license permits it
  • Prefer running everything locally on your own machine

It may not be the right choice if you:

  • Want a fully managed service with no local setup — although a cloud option exists, the project's emphasis is on local execution
  • Need guaranteed support, SLAs, or a vendor relationship, since Applio is community-maintained rather than a commercial product

The open-source angle, briefly

Applio is community-driven: features, bug fixes, and roadmap items are discussed openly, and the code is fully inspectable. The MIT license means you can use, modify, and redistribute it for personal projects, research, or commercial work. No account is needed, and no telemetry is collected — everything runs locally on your machine by default.

Where to start

  • Download the Desktop app or Gradio WebUI from the Applio site
  • Browse community voice models if you want to convert before training
  • Test in the Playground to see conversion quality before building a dataset
  • Read the Documentation for training and dataset preparation details
  • Join the Community or check the GitHub repository to contribute, report issues, or follow development
