What Is ArtBot on tinyBots.net and How Does It Create AI Art?

Updated

ArtBot is a free generative AI art service hosted on tinyBots.net, the personal project site of developer Dave Schumaker. It creates images by sending your request to AI Horde, an open-sourced Stable Diffusion distributed cluster, rather than running the model on a single company-owned server. That means anyone can use it to generate AI art at no cost, but the trade-off is that your request joins a shared queue handled by volunteers' hardware.

What ArtBot actually does

ArtBot takes a text prompt and returns a generated image. According to the site's own description, it is "a free service that utilizes an open-sourced Stable Diffusion distributed cluster ('AI Horde') to create generative AI art."

Two things stand out in that sentence:

  • Free — no pricing or payment signals appear anywhere on the site, and ArtBot is listed alongside other free tools rather than as a paid product.
  • Distributed — the image generation does not happen on tinyBots.net's own infrastructure. It is outsourced to AI Horde.

How the generation pipeline works

The mechanism is a three-part chain:

  1. You submit a prompt. You describe the image you want in text.
  2. AI Horde picks it up. AI Horde is a crowdsourced cluster of Stable Diffusion workers. Volunteers donate compute time, and their machines process queued jobs.
  3. An image comes back. A worker generates the image from your prompt and returns the result.

Because the compute is donated rather than owned, ArtBot does not need to charge users or run expensive GPUs itself. The same AI Horde backend also powers another tinyBots.net project, Real Fake News, which uses it to generate an image to accompany a ChatGPT-written article.

A concrete example

Say you want a landscape in the style of Bob Ross. You type a prompt describing that scene into ArtBot. Your job enters the AI Horde queue, a volunteer's machine runs Stable Diffusion on it, and the finished image is sent back to you. The site's separate Mr. RossBot project does something similar automatically — it tweets a new Bob Ross-style Stable Diffusion painting every hour — which shows the same underlying technology applied to a scheduled bot instead of an on-demand request.

What to expect when you use it

Aspect What it means for you
Cost Free to use, based on the site's description
Model Stable Diffusion, via the open-source AI Horde cluster
Speed Depends on the shared queue and available volunteer workers
Input A text prompt describing the image you want
Output A generated AI art image

The main practical consideration is that you are relying on a distributed, volunteer-run network. Availability and wait times are tied to how many workers are online, not to a guaranteed service level.

Where ArtBot fits on tinyBots.net

ArtBot is one of several public-facing AI projects on the site, alongside:

  • Real Fake News — you supply headlines, ChatGPT writes an article, and AI Horde generates a matching image.
  • Mr. RossBot — a Twitter bot posting hourly Stable Diffusion landscapes.
  • Just Triangles — a Twitter bot generating random triangle patterns from colormind.io palettes.
  • Random Sandwiches — a procedurally generated "book" of 1,449.5 sandwich recipes made for NaNoGenMo 2017.

If your goal is simply to generate AI art for free without setting up Stable Diffusion yourself, ArtBot is the entry point. If you need guaranteed speed or full control over the model, a distributed volunteer cluster is not the right fit.
