What Is Avrae? A Discord Bot for Running D&D Online
Updated
Avrae is a Discord bot built to streamline playing D&D over Discord. It combines an advanced dice roller, character sheet integration, and initiative tracking in one bot, so a group can run combat and skill checks without switching between separate tools. It is relevant if you already play D&D in a Discord server and want rolls, sheets, and turn order handled in the same text channel.
Core Features
Advanced Dice Roller
Avrae uses a custom dice parser and is described as one of the most advanced dice rollers on Discord, capable of supporting pretty much every type of roll needed to play D&D. Built-in behavior includes:
- Advantage, disadvantage, and crits
- Keeping, dropping, or rerolling dice as needed
- Exploding dice
- Bounded dice
This matters because common D&D rolls (attack rolls with advantage, Great Weapon Fighting rerolls, exploding damage dice) can be expressed directly rather than resolved by hand.
Character Sheet Integration
Avrae can read character sheets from D&D Beyond, Dicecloud, or a Google Sheet. From those sheets it automatically generates macros to roll attacks, ability checks, and saving throws. A player can then use a command to make a check, save, attack, or cast, and all necessary rolls are resolved automatically.
In practice, this means a player does not need to manually assemble a dice expression for every action — the bot pulls the relevant numbers from the linked sheet.
Initiative Tracking
The initiative tracker is a fast way to track combat in a text channel. It supports:
- Automatic combatant sorting
- HP, AC, resistance, and status effect tracking
- Integration with the character sheet manager and 5e content
That combination lets a DM run a full combat turn order in the same channel where players are already rolling.
How to Add Avrae to a Server
- Open the invite flow on the Avrae site and select your server from the dropdown menu.
- When prompted for permissions, ensure Read Messages, Send Messages, Embed Links, and Manage Messages are enabled.
- Confirm the invite.
The permission set is required for Avrae to read commands, post roll results as embeds, and manage its own messages in the channel.
What to Check Before Using It
- Where your sheet lives. Integration only works with D&D Beyond, Dicecloud, or a Google Sheet — if your table uses a different sheet format, the automatic macro generation will not apply.
- Discord permissions. If the four listed permissions are not granted, the bot may not function correctly in the channel.
- Edition support. The initiative tracker references 5e content, so it is oriented toward 5th edition play.
Avrae is best suited to groups already running D&D in Discord who want dice, sheets, and combat tracking consolidated into one bot rather than spread across multiple tools.
