What is Chrome Theme Studio?

Updated

Chrome Theme Studio (chrometheme.studio) is a free browser-theme creation tool that lets you build a custom theme for Chromium-based browsers — Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Brave — by adjusting colors in real time and then downloading the finished theme. It suits anyone who wants a personalized browser look without writing code or installing an extension; you only need a Chromium-based browser and a few minutes to pick colors.

What you can customize

The tool groups its color controls into five sections, each covering a different browser state:

Section What it controls
Universal Toolbar, toolbar button icon, URL bar text, URL bar background, tab text, bookmark text
Active Frame background, tab background, tab text (for the focused window)
Inactive Frame background, tab background, tab text (for unfocused windows)
Incognito Frame background, tab background, tab text (for private browsing)
Inactive & Incognito Frame background, tab background, tab text (private browsing, unfocused)

Because active, inactive, and incognito states are separated, you can make the theme change appearance depending on whether the window has focus or is in private mode — a detail many simple theme generators skip.

How it works

  1. Pick a color. Click the colored box in the row for the element you want to change. The preview updates in real time, so you see the effect immediately.
  2. Repeat across sections. Work through Universal first (it affects the most visible parts), then adjust Active, Inactive, and Incognito states if you want state-specific looks.
  3. Download. When you're satisfied, click the Download Theme button at the top of the page. That produces the theme file you install in your browser.

The real-time preview is the main workflow advantage: instead of guessing hex values and reloading, you adjust and observe in the same view.

Things to keep in mind

  • Chromium only. The tool targets Chromium-based browsers, so Firefox and Safari are out of scope.
  • Reset option. A Reset Colors control lets you return to defaults if an experiment goes wrong — useful before starting over.
  • No account or pricing information is stated on the page. The site describes the tool as free, but nothing on the page confirms whether downloads or any feature require login, so treat that as unverified until you try it.
  • Contrast matters. Text colors (URL bar text, tab text, bookmark text) are set separately from backgrounds. If you pick a dark background, check that the text colors you chose remain readable in both active and inactive states.

A practical example: if you want a dark toolbar with light text but a lighter inactive window so background windows recede, set the Universal toolbar and URL bar colors first, then give Active and Inactive different frame backgrounds — the preview will show both states as you switch between them.
