What is Confluent and what does its Data Streaming Platform do?
Updated
Confluent is a data streaming platform built on Apache Kafka® and Apache Flink® that lets you stream, connect, process, and govern data in real time. It is designed for teams building real-time data architectures and AI applications, and it can be deployed as a fully managed cloud service, on-premises, or in a private cloud.
What the platform actually does
The platform covers four core jobs, each tied to a specific product area:
- Stream — Move data continuously rather than in batches. Confluent Cloud is the fully managed, cloud-native Kafka service; Confluent Platform runs the complete stack on-premises.
- Connect — Connectors integrate your existing data ecosystem so sources and sinks don't need custom code.
- Process — Stream Processing transforms, analyzes, and acts on data as it arrives, using Flink.
- Govern — Stream Governance is aimed at democratizing access to high-quality data, so more people can use it without losing control of it.
Two newer pieces extend this toward AI and analytics: Tableflow turns topics into tables (Iceberg or Delta Lake) in a few clicks, and Confluent Intelligence plus Streaming Agents support real-time, context-aware AI and automated business processes.
Deployment options
| Option | What it is | Fits when |
|---|---|---|
| Confluent Cloud | Fully managed, cloud-native Kafka service | You want to avoid running Kafka yourself |
| Confluent Platform | Complete data streaming platform, self-managed | You need on-premises control |
| Confluent Private Cloud | On-premise control with cloud-style automation | You want on-prem data with managed operations |
| WarpStream | Kafka-compatible platform in your private cloud | You want Kafka compatibility in your own cloud |
Where it's typically used
The site groups solutions around concrete use cases rather than abstract features:
- Shift left analytics — clean and govern data at the source, then turn topics into Iceberg or Delta Lake tables.
- Generative AI — build RAG and agentic AI use cases on real-time, contextual, trustworthy data.
- Event-driven microservices — build applications where events drive behavior.
- Telemetry and observability pipelines — control telemetry before it reaches your observability tools.
Industry-specific solutions exist for financial services, retail and eCommerce, manufacturing and automotive, public sector, and telecommunications.
How it relates to Apache Kafka
Confluent is built on Kafka's heritage but is not the same thing. The site maintains a dedicated comparison page ("Confluent vs. Apache Kafka®") for practitioners who want to understand the difference. If you are already running self-managed Kafka, the Cost Estimator is the tool Confluent provides to compare your current spend against Confluent.
Practical next steps
- Evaluating cost or deployment fit — start with the pricing page and the Cost Estimator.
- Learning the platform — the Demo Center holds explainer videos and tutorials organized by where you are in your data streaming journey.
- Choosing a path — the site splits guidance by role: "For Practitioners" for builders, "For Executives" for business value.
- Checking fit against your stack — customer testimonials and case studies are collected under "Our Customers."
One caveat worth noting: pricing structure, feature tiers, and deployment specifics are described on Confluent's own pricing pages, and those details change. Confirm current terms there rather than relying on any summary.
