What Is Crx4Chrome?

Updated

Crx4Chrome is a third-party download site for Chrome extensions, apps, and themes. It hosts .crx installer files that you can download directly, rather than installing through the Chrome Web Store. It's most useful when you need an offline installer, want to sideload an extension, or can't reach the Web Store — but it is not an official Google service, so you should treat downloads accordingly.

What Crx4Chrome offers

The site is organized around three content types and several ranking lists:

  • Content types: Extensions, Themes, and Apps.
  • Ranking lists: Top Download, Top Updated, Best Rated, New Added, Total Download, and Most Installed — each split into Extensions and Apps.
  • Categories: Fun, Productivity, Search Tools, Developer Tools, Accessibility, Education, and Entertainment.

Each listing shows the extension name, version number, and a "Download Crx" link. Newer entries also include a short description, category, and last-updated date.

How to use it

  1. Browse or search by category or ranking list to find an extension.
  2. Open the listing and check the name and version against what you expect.
  3. Click "Download Crx" to get the .crx file.
  4. Install it manually in Chrome (typically via chrome://extensions with Developer mode enabled, then drag-and-drop or "Load unpacked" depending on the file).

The expected result is a locally saved installer you can use without the Web Store. A common snag: Chrome may block or warn about extensions installed outside the Web Store, and .crx files sometimes need to be extracted rather than dropped in directly.

What to watch for

  • Version currency: Listings show specific versions (for example, uBlock Origin 1.71.0 or AdGuard AdBlocker 5.5.2.36). These may lag behind or differ from the Web Store version, so verify before relying on one.
  • Source trust: Crx4Chrome is an independent aggregator. It is not affiliated with Google or the extension developers, so confirm the publisher before installing anything sensitive.
  • No pricing signals: The site's pages don't indicate paid tiers or accounts, but that doesn't mean every listed extension is free — check the developer's own terms.

Who it's for

Crx4Chrome suits users who need offline or sideloaded CRX files, want to browse extensions by popularity or rating, or are looking for a specific version. If you just want the latest official build with automatic updates, the Chrome Web Store is the safer default.
