What Is DMP and How Do You Play Kerbal Space Program Multiplayer?

Updated

DMP is a multiplayer mod for Kerbal Space Program (KSP). It lets you join a shared server where you can watch other players' spacecraft — including watching them crash — or fly together to destinations like the Moon. To play, you download and install the DMP client, then join a server from the official server list. To host your own, you download the server, forward the DMP default port (6702) in your router, and optionally install the Reporting Server plugin to appear on the server list.

What DMP Adds to KSP

KSP is normally a single-player game. DMP changes that by connecting multiple players to the same server, so you can:

  • See other players' spacecraft and watch their launches, maneuvers, and crashes
  • Fly alongside other players toward shared goals such as reaching the Moon
  • Talk with the people you're playing with over voice chat

The mod is distributed through the official DMP website, which also maintains the server list players connect to.

How to Join a DMP Server

Joining is a three-step process:

  1. Download the DMP client from the DMP website's Downloads page.
  2. Install it into your KSP setup.
  3. Pick a server from the Serverlist and connect.

That's the whole join flow as described by DMP: download, install, join from the list. You don't need to set up any networking yourself to be a client — the server host handles that.

How to Host Your Own DMP Server

If you want to run a server instead of just joining one:

  1. Download the server from the DMP website.
  2. Forward the DMP default port (6702) in your router so outside players can reach it.
  3. Optional: install the DMP Reporting Server plugin if you want your server to appear on the official Serverlist. Without it, players won't find you through the list.

The port forwarding step is the part most likely to trip people up — if players can't connect, an unforwarded or misconfigured 6702 is the first thing to check.

Voice Chat with Mumble

DMP runs its own Mumble server for VoIP, so you can talk while you fly. To use it:

  • Connect to d-mp.org using the default port 64738
  • Download the Mumble client if you don't already have it

This is separate from the game connection — you join the Mumble server directly with the Mumble client.

What to Decide First

If you just want to try multiplayer, start as a client: install the DMP client and join an existing server from the list. Only set up your own server if you want a persistent world you control or a private session with friends — that path requires router access for port forwarding and, if you want public visibility, the Reporting Server plugin.
