What Is Ezstems and What Does It Do?
Updated
Ezstems is a browser-based audio stem separation tool. You upload a song or other audio file, and it runs the file through the Spleeter AI model to split it into separate tracks — called stems — that download automatically when processing finishes. It is aimed at anyone who wants isolated vocals, drums, bass, or other parts without installing desktop software. The site advertises free stem creation, with a paid subscription for higher limits.
How the separation works
Ezstems uses Spleeter, a music source separation tool from Deezer Research, presented in the 2019 ISMIR paper Spleeter: A Fast And State-of-the Art Music Source Separation Tool With Pre-trained Models. Spleeter relies on pre-trained models to estimate which parts of a mixed recording belong to which instrument or voice, then writes each estimate to its own file.
In practice, you do not configure the model. You choose how many stems you want and the output format, upload the file, and wait.
What you can choose before uploading
The upload screen exposes a small set of options:
| Option | Choices shown |
|---|---|
| Number of stems | 2 stems, 4 stems, 5 stems |
| Output format | mp3 at 128, 192, 256, or 320; wav |
| Frequency cutoff | 11 kHz or 16 kHz |
A higher stem count means finer separation — for example, splitting vocals from everything else (2 stems) versus isolating more individual parts (4 or 5 stems). The mp3 bitrate and the wav option control output quality and file size. The cutoff setting limits the high-frequency range kept in the output.
You must agree to the terms and conditions before the upload proceeds.
The processing flow, step by step
- Select your options — stem count, output format, and cutoff.
- Upload your audio file. The page shows "Uploading your file..."
- Wait for processing. The page shows "Processing your song..." and warns: Don't close your browser. If other jobs are ahead of you, it displays your position in the queue.
- Download the stems. When processing completes, the page reports "Processing Complete!" and the stems begin downloading automatically, with a manual "Click here to download" link as backup.
- Process another file if you want, using the "Process Another" option.
The key constraint to plan around: processing is tied to your open browser session, so closing the tab mid-job interrupts it.
Free use and what the subscription adds
The site's headline offer is "Create stems from any song for free." The paid tier is framed around removing limits rather than unlocking the core feature. According to the site, subscribing lets you:
- Bypass a 20 uploads per day limit
- Raise the 20 MB file size cap
- Get direct API access for your own applications
There is also a "skip the queue" option tied to membership, which matters if you are uploading during busy periods. A Subscribe link is present in the site navigation. The site does not publish prices on the pages reviewed here, so check the subscribe page for current terms before committing.
When Ezstems fits and when it does not
Ezstems is a reasonable fit if you want quick, no-install separation of a track and your files are under the free size cap. It is a poor fit if you need to process large files, run many songs per day, or automate separation inside another application — those are exactly the cases the subscription targets, and the API is the route for programmatic use.
If your audio exceeds the free file size cap or you need batch processing, decide between subscribing and running Spleeter locally, which removes upload limits but requires setting up the tool yourself.
