What is Fork (fork.gg)?

Updated

Fork is a free, open-source GUI for managing Minecraft servers on Windows. It is a desktop tool you install on your own machine to create, configure, and monitor servers you host yourself — not a hosting service that runs servers for you. It fits best if you run Windows 8.1/10 (1607+) or Windows Server 2016+ (64-bit) and want a visual alternative to editing config files and typing console commands by hand.

What Fork actually does

Fork wraps the parts of server administration that are usually spread across config files, terminal windows, and file explorers into one interface. According to the project's own feature list, it covers:

  • Terminal page — manage players, check server status, and run commands in the Minecraft console from one screen.
  • Custom settings pages — edit server configuration through guided forms that validate your input and write it to the correct config files automatically.
  • Built-in editor — for config files that don't yet have a custom page, Fork includes a modern text editor so you don't have to fall back on Notepad.
  • Create page — spin up new servers, or entire proxy networks, in a few clicks. Fork states it always supports the newest versions of each server type.
  • Import page — if you already have a server set up, you point Fork to its location and it integrates the existing server into the app.
  • Multiple servers and networks — run several servers at once and combine them into a single network using Waterfall.
  • Plugin support — full support for Paper, plus a plugin manager to help you find and handle plugins.
  • Hardware statistics — CPU usage and similar system metrics, alongside automatic server restarts.

What it is not

Fork is not a hosting provider. You still need your own machine (or a Windows server you control) to run the Minecraft server itself. Fork is the management layer on top. It also is not cross-platform today: the site states Fork can only run on Windows, with Mac and Linux support described as work in progress.

Who it's for

Fork targets people who want a clean, understandable interface rather than a command-line-only workflow — the site explicitly says the UI is meant for new and experienced users alike. If you're comfortable managing a Paper or Waterfall setup by hand and don't mind Windows-only tooling, Fork is a convenience layer rather than a necessity. If you're on Mac or Linux, it isn't an option yet.

One thing to keep in mind: the FAQ notes Fork is undergoing a major rework, with the core being changed and larger features planned. Until that lands, updates are limited to small bug fixes — worth knowing if you're deciding whether to build a long-term workflow around the current version.
