What Is FreeMoCap?
Updated
FreeMoCap is a free, open-source markerless motion capture application that turns footage from ordinary cameras into 3D movement data. It is aimed at researchers, animators, athletes, coaches, performers, engineers, and clinicians who need motion capture but don't want to buy dedicated mocap hardware or software. If you have two or more standard webcams, GoPros, or smartphones and a computer to process the video, FreeMoCap is designed for your situation.
What "markerless" means here
Traditional motion capture often requires reflective markers or sensor suits attached to the body. FreeMoCap instead reconstructs full-body 3D movement from video alone, using computer vision and machine learning tools. The project describes itself as connecting a set of "bleeding edge" open-source tools from those communities into one user-friendly framework.
It records the movement of humans, animals, robots, and other objects — not just people.
How the workflow is structured
The official site lays out four stages:
- Setup — Position two or more standard cameras (webcams, GoPros, or smartphones) around your space. The design is meant to work with everyday devices rather than specialized mocap hardware.
- Calibrate the space — Wave a printed ChArUco board within view of all cameras. This synchronizes the feeds and defines the 3D coordinate system needed for accurate spatial reconstruction.
- Record the motion — Either record synchronized footage directly through the FreeMoCap interface, or record offline on your mobile devices and import the video files later.
- Process and reconstruct — A local processing engine converts the video into 3D data.
What you get out of it
Results are exported in multiple formats, including:
- CSV — for analysis
- FBX and .blend — for professional animation and research pipelines
- and "many others," per the site
Because processing runs locally, the reconstruction step happens on your own machine rather than in the cloud.
Who it's built for
The stated mission of the Free Motion Capture Project is to provide research-grade markerless motion capture to everyone for free. The project follows a "Universal Design" philosophy: the goal is a system that serves a professional research scientist while remaining intuitive to a 13-year-old with no technical training and no outside assistance.
The communities it names as beneficiaries include 3D animators, game designers, athletes, coaches, performers, scientists, engineers, clinicians, and doctors.
Where to start
The site offers three entry points: Download, Docs, and Code. If you're evaluating whether FreeMoCap fits your project, the Docs are the place to check camera requirements, calibration details, and export options before committing to a setup.
