What Is GeoTips?
Updated
GeoTips (geotips.net) is a free resource site for GeoGuessr players who want to get better at the game. It is built by "a selected team of the best players in the GeoGuessr community," and its core content is organized by region: a world map lets you click a continent or country to expand its tips, with separate sections for Europe, Asia, South America, Oceania, North America, and Africa. If you are completely new to GeoGuessr, the site also tells you to read the general tips at the end of the main page.
What you'll find on the site
- Region-by-region tips. The main navigation is a world map plus a top-of-page list. Clicking a region expands its content. The site notes the map is "updated often," and lists Canada, Kazakhstan, and India among the most recently updated maps.
- General tips and tricks. A dedicated section covers the basics that apply everywhere, not just to one country.
- World Records. A separate page tracks records, and records set with the site's own browser get priority in the verification queue.
- GeoTips Monthly League and GeoTips Pro League. The site runs its own competitive leagues and links to a Discord community.
- GeoTips Browser. A downloadable browser tool, currently at v1.2, with full screen, a back-to-previous-URL function, better performance, and an improved anti-cheat method.
The general tips, in short
The site's general advice starts with the same first move you make in any round: look around. Beyond identifying the country or area from what you see, it points you toward "metagame" clues that are also listed per country on the map:
- Google Street View camera quality. There are four generations of Street View cameras, and the generation can help narrow down which country you are in. The site links to a separate camera types explanation with examples.
- The Street View car. The cars used to capture Street View differ by country. Some have distinctive bars or a roof rack, some look unusual, and even plain-looking cars can come in different colors.
- The sun. With the in-game compass on the left (the red end of the needle points north), you can work out whether the sun is to your north or south. Sun in the north means you are in the southern hemisphere; sun in the south means the northern hemisphere. The site flags this as unreliable near the equator, when the sun appears in the middle, or when it sits low.
Who it's for
GeoTips suits two kinds of players: complete beginners who need the general tips and a way to start recognizing countries, and more experienced players who want country-specific metagame details and a place to follow records and leagues. Because the content is organized geographically and the map is updated regularly, it works as a reference you return to rather than something you read once.
Practical notes
- The site describes itself as free, and the team behind it is described as players from the GeoGuessr community.
- If you care about world records, using the GeoTips Records Browser matters: records set with it are prioritized in the verification queue.
- The community side lives on Discord, which the site links to alongside the leagues.
