What Is Happening to Smartlook and What Are the Key Shutdown Dates?
Updated
Smartlook is being wound down as a standalone product and will be fully decommissioned on 30 September 2027, when all remaining customer data is securely deleted. If you use Smartlook or are evaluating it, the practical constraints are: no new subscriptions after 31 May 2026, no renewals or expansions after 31 August 2026, and no paid support after 31 August 2027. Plan any migration or data export before those dates.
What Smartlook has announced
Smartlook has joined Cisco, and over the coming year it will gradually wind down as a standalone product. According to Smartlook's own FAQ, the most valuable parts of the experience will continue within a broader platform: Digital Experience Analytics, part of the Splunk Observability Cloud.
That means the product isn't disappearing without a successor path — but the standalone Smartlook platform itself has a fixed end date, and existing subscriptions will terminate on a set schedule rather than continue indefinitely.
Key dates at a glance
| Date | Milestone | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| 31 May 2026 | End of Sale (EoS) | No new paid Smartlook plans can be purchased |
| 31 August 2026 | End of Contract Renewals | No renewals or expansions for existing accounts; paid subscriptions terminate at the end of the current plan or next renewal date |
| 31 August 2027 | Last Day of Support (LDoS) | All remaining paid subscriptions end (applies to annual renewals initiated by 31 August 2026) |
| 30 September 2027 | Platform Decommissioned | Smartlook is deactivated; all remaining customer data is securely deleted |
What each milestone actually changes
End of Sale — 31 May 2026
From this date, no new paid plans are available for purchase. If you are still deciding whether to adopt Smartlook, this is the hard cutoff for starting a new paid subscription.
End of Contract Renewals — 31 August 2026
From this date, no renewals or expansions for existing accounts will be sold. Any paid Smartlook subscription terminates at the end of its current plan or its next renewal date. In practice, this is when you need to have decided where your session recordings, events, funnels, heatmaps, and behavior-flow data will live next.
Last Day of Support — 31 August 2027
All paid subscriptions are terminated no later than this date. The FAQ ties this to annual renewals initiated by 31 August 2026, so the exact end of your access depends on your contract's renewal timing within that window.
Platform Decommissioned — 30 September 2027
The Smartlook platform is deactivated, remaining customer data is securely deleted, and the platform is fully decommissioned. After this point there is no recovery path from Smartlook itself.
What Smartlook does today (and what you'd be replacing)
The current product combines session recordings with event-based analytics, so you can see what went wrong on a mobile app or website and jump to the crucial moment with advanced filtering. Alongside recordings and events, the platform covers:
- Funnels — see where and why users drop off, with recordings of drop-offs in one click
- Heatmaps — where users click and how far they scroll
- Behavior Flows — how users move through your site or app, and whether your intended path works
- Crash reports — session recordings from the moments leading up to a crash, so you can diagnose without QA reproduction
If those capabilities are central to your workflow, the wind-down means mapping each one to a replacement before your renewal window closes.
How to plan around the shutdown
- Check your renewal date. If it falls after 31 August 2026, your subscription ends at that renewal rather than continuing — confirm the exact date with your account contact.
- Export what you need before 30 September 2027. Recordings and analytics data are deleted at decommissioning; treat that date as a hard deadline, not a target.
- Evaluate the successor platform. Smartlook points to Digital Experience Analytics within Splunk Observability Cloud as where its core experience continues. Assess whether it covers the specific features you rely on — recordings, funnels, heatmaps, flows, crash context — rather than assuming a one-to-one carryover.
- Sequence the migration. Run any parallel period before your current plan ends, so you aren't left without recordings during the transition.
Common pitfalls
- Assuming access runs to September 2027. Support ends 31 August 2027; the extra month is for decommissioning, not for continued use.
- Waiting for a renewal that won't be sold. After 31 August 2026, no renewals or expansions are available — there is no option to extend.
- Treating data export as optional. Decommissioning includes secure deletion of remaining customer data, so anything not exported is gone.
- Expecting feature parity in the successor. The announcement describes the most valuable parts of the experience continuing in a broader platform; verify the specific capabilities you depend on.
