What Is Irssi?

Updated

Irssi is a modular, text-mode chat client with IRC support built in. It has been developed since 1999 and is aimed at users who prefer working in a terminal and want a chat client they can theme, extend with C modules, and automate through a scripting API. If you want a graphical chat app with a point-and-click setup, Irssi is probably not the right fit; if you live in a terminal and want deep customization, it is worth considering.

Core characteristics

  • Text-mode interface. Irssi runs in a terminal rather than a graphical window, so it fits naturally into SSH sessions and keyboard-driven workflows.
  • IRC built in. IRC support is included by default, so you can connect to IRC networks without adding a protocol module first.
  • Modular architecture. Protocol modules can be written in C, and the project notes that Irssi can be combined with IRC, ICB, or SILC through modules.
  • Theming. The client is described as completely themeable: every single message can be themed, and true colours can be used in themes. A theme gallery is available for impressions.
  • Scripting. Irssi provides a scripting API together with a signal handling mechanism, and there are many existing scripts available.

Who it suits

Irssi fits users who:

  • Are comfortable in a terminal and prefer keyboard-driven interaction.
  • Want a client that can be reshaped through themes rather than accepting a fixed interface.
  • Need to extend or automate behaviour, either by writing protocol modules in C or by using the scripting API.
  • Want IRC available immediately without extra protocol setup.

It is less suited to users who want a graphical interface, or who do not want to configure and script their client to get the experience they want.
