What is ISPP (International Society of Political Psychology)?

Updated

ISPP is the International Society of Political Psychology, an interdisciplinary organization representing all fields of inquiry concerned with exploring the relationships between political and psychological processes. It is relevant to you if you work at the intersection of politics and psychology — as a researcher, practitioner, journalist, or government official — or if you want to follow or participate in that field. The society is international, with members from the Americas, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.

What ISPP does

ISPP brings together people and fields that study how political and psychological processes connect. Its members include psychologists, political scientists, psychiatrists, historians, sociologists, economists, anthropologists, as well as journalists, government officials, and others. That mix is the point: the organization is explicitly interdisciplinary rather than tied to a single discipline or method.

Main activities

Annual meeting

The annual meeting is ISPP's central recurring event. Upcoming and recent dates listed by the society:

Meeting Location Dates
Next Annual Meeting Newcastle, United Kingdom 16–19 July 2026
50th Annual Meeting Amsterdam, The Netherlands 6–9 July 2027

ISPP Newsletter (ISPPNews)

The society publishes a newsletter. Recent issues noted include September 2026 and July 2026, along with announcements such as calls for small grant proposals and governing council nominations.

Academic freedom and Scholars Under Threat

ISPP states that academic freedom — the right to teach and/or research a topic without fear of personal or professional repercussions — is essential for advancing scientific knowledge. To address threats to that right, ISPP joined the Scholars at Risk Network and aims to protect anyone whose academic freedom is at risk anywhere in the world. The Twinning Program is accepting applications on a rolling basis.

The society also runs a Scholars Under Threat Fund. According to ISPP, donations to the fund are currently used to help support academic scholars in Turkey affected by recent actions of the country's government.

Who it is for

ISPP is aimed at anyone whose work or interest involves the relationship between political and psychological processes. Because it is interdisciplinary and international, it is not limited to one profession or region. If you are deciding whether to engage, the practical entry points are the annual meeting, the newsletter, and the academic freedom programs described above.

Membership and pricing

ISPP has a membership pricing page at https://ispp.org/membership/pricing/. The available material does not list specific membership tiers, fees, or payment methods, so check that page directly for current details.
