What Is ITMA (itma.ie)?
Updated
ITMA stands for the Irish Traditional Music Archive, an organisation that describes itself as "championing the value and relevance of Irish traditional music." Its website, itma.ie, is a free public archive and reference resource for Irish traditional music, song and dance. You can use it to browse collections, listen to and watch recordings, read manuscripts and catalogues, explore exhibitions, and look up places, people, tunes, songs and instruments. It is aimed at anyone with an interest in the tradition — listeners, learners, researchers and performers — rather than at a specialist or paying audience.
What you can find on the site
The site is organised around a set of content areas that appear in its main navigation:
- Listen and Watch — audio and video material from the archive.
- Read — written material, including manuscripts.
- Collections — the archive's holdings, including the RPA Collections.
- Explore — browsing by Places, People, Tunes, Songs, Dance, Decades and Instruments.
- Exhibitions — curated online exhibitions, including Saothar Port, Drawing from the Well (Taoscadh ón Tobar) and From the Bridge.
- Catalogues — searchable catalogue entries for the archive's materials.
- News, Blog and Events — updates on acquisitions and public activity.
A site-wide search box sits alongside the main catalogues search, so you can search either the whole website or the catalogues specifically.
Access and accounts
ITMA states a commitment to "free, universal access" to the tradition it holds, and the site presents its collections, listening and viewing material as openly available. You do not need an account simply to browse.
Registration is offered as an optional convenience: signing up for the ITMA archive lets you save content you find across the site and reach it directly from your own dashboard. There is a standard login with email address and password, a "Remember Me" option, and a password reset. The site is bilingual, with Gaeilge and English options, and includes accessibility controls for font sizing, contrast and a monochrome display.
Supporting the archive
The site invites donations to fund digitisation, preservation and free access, and lists suggested amounts from €10 upward. Two points from its own donation information are worth noting if you are considering giving:
- Irish taxpayers: donations above €250 in a tax year can be augmented by the State through the CHY3 form. ITMA's example states that a donation above €250 is worth €362.33 to its archival work at no additional cost to the donor.
- US donors: ITMA says it is eligible for 501(c)3 donations, which may make giving tax-efficient for donors based in the USA.
The site also links to a shop, so some items or publications may be sold separately from the free archive content.
When ITMA is the right place to look
ITMA is a good starting point if you want to:
- trace a tune, song or dance item and see what the archive holds;
- browse by decade, place, person or instrument to understand a period or region;
- read manuscripts or catalogue records for research;
- watch or listen to recordings rather than just read about them;
- follow current exhibitions and archive news.
It is an archive and reference service, not a streaming or commercial music platform, so expect catalogue records, manuscripts and curated collections rather than a general listening service. If your goal is to save items for later study, registering for a dashboard is the practical step; if you only want to explore, the search and browse sections are enough.
