What is Jamstack.org?

Updated

Jamstack.org is the official informational site for the Jamstack architectural approach, maintained by Netlify. It answers the question "What is Jamstack?" and gathers related resources in one place: a glossary, Jamstack TV, a site generators directory, a headless CMS listing, community survey results, and links to Netlify's support and policy pages. It is aimed at developers and technical decision-makers who want to understand or adopt the architecture, not at end users looking for a product to sign up for.

What the site actually says Jamstack is

The site defines Jamstack as "an architectural approach that decouples the web experience layer from data and business logic, improving flexibility, scalability, performance, and maintainability."

Two points in that definition matter more than the rest:

  • Decoupling is the core idea. Business logic does not dictate how the web experience is built. The presentation layer is separated from the data and logic behind it.
  • Composability comes from APIs. Custom logic and third-party services are consumed through APIs, so you assemble a stack from services rather than from one monolithic runtime.

The site also credits Matt Biilmann with taking the concept mainstream through his 2016 Smashing Conf presentation, and links to that talk as the "quintessential introduction."

What you can find on the site

Section What it gives you
Glossary Terminology for the architecture and its surrounding ecosystem
Jamstack TV Video content, including the original Biilmann talk
Site Generators A directory of static site generators
Headless CMS A listing of headless content management options
Community Survey Data on who is building, what they are building, and how
Connect Ways to follow or join the community

The survey section is organized around three questions: who's doing the building, what the community is building, and how they are building it. That makes it the most useful part of the site if you want evidence about real adoption rather than a definition.

Who it is for

  • Developers evaluating an architecture. Start with the definition and the Biilmann talk, then use the generator and headless CMS directories to see what a concrete stack could look like.
  • Teams comparing approaches. The decoupling and API-composability framing is the site's stated case; treat it as the vendor's position and test it against your own requirements.
  • Anyone checking what the site is. It is a reference and resource hub, operated by Netlify, with links out to Netlify Support, GitHub, the Code of Conduct, Trust Center, Privacy, Security, and GDPR/CCPA pages.

Practical notes

The site presents the architecture and points to tools; it does not itself host your project. If you arrive expecting to build or deploy something on jamstack.org, you will not find that here — the generator and CMS listings are directories that send you elsewhere.

Because the site is run by Netlify, its framing of Jamstack aligns with Netlify's platform. That does not make the definition wrong, but it is worth reading the community survey and the linked talks alongside it if you want a broader view.
