What is Metalforge Server?
Updated
Metalforge Server is a public gaming server for Crossfire, an open source, cooperative multiplayer graphical RPG and adventure game. You connect to it at crossfire.metalforge.net. The key thing to know before you join: Metalforge runs an older release of the Crossfire game code, so current clients can connect, but not every client feature is supported on this server.
What Crossfire is
Crossfire is a medieval-fantasy RPG in the same broad genre as other cooperative multiplayer adventure games. According to the server's own description, the game includes:
- Over 150 monsters
- About 3,000 maps to explore
- An elaborate magic system
- 13 races and 15 character classes
- A system of skills
- Many artifacts and treasures
It is freely distributed under the GNU license, and the code is available from a number of download sites.
What Metalforge provides
Metalforge is the server, not the game itself. Its role is to host a shared world that multiple players can join at once. The site organizes its material into sections that map to what you might need:
| Section | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Clients | Software for connecting to the server |
| Download / Releases | Getting the game and its releases |
| Revision Control (SVN) | Source code access |
| Compile from Source | Building the game yourself |
| Gridarta Map Editor | Map creation tooling |
| Requirements | What you need to run things |
| Server ChangeLog / MOTD / News | Server-side updates and announcements |
| Server Rules | Rules for playing on Metalforge |
| Server Features | What the server supports |
| Compatibility | Client/server version fit |
| Quests Page | Quest-related information |
The compatibility caveat
The site flags this prominently: because Metalforge is on an older code release, not all features of a current client are supported. If you plan to play here, check the Compatibility page and the Server Features page before assuming a client feature will work. This matters most if you are using a recent client build and expect newer functionality.
Who runs it
The site lists its host as Real Time Enterprises, Inc., with a contact address of [email protected]. The page was last updated 01-Feb-2026.
Where to go next
- New to the game? The site points to an Introduction, FAQ, and a New Players FAQ, plus a Crossfire Handbook and Survival Guide.
- Need help or other players? There are IRC and Discord channels listed.
- Looking for the wider project? The Crossfire website (crossfire.real-time.com), the Crossfire Wiki (wiki.cross-fire.org), the Crossfire Map Atlas (crossfireatlas.net), and SourceForge are all linked from Metalforge.
- Finding other servers: Metaserver listings are available at crossfire.real-time.com and the EU and US metaserver hosts.
If your goal is simply to play Crossfire cooperatively on a long-running public server, Metalforge is a direct entry point — just confirm client compatibility first. If you need the newest game features, the older code release here is the limiting factor to weigh.
