What is minimator?

Updated

minimator is a minimalist graphical editor that runs in your browser and on mobile devices. Every drawing is built from lines on a grid-based canvas, and the line types are limited to vertical lines, horizontal lines, and quarter circles. If you want a fast, constraint-driven way to sketch geometric graphics without installing software, minimator fits that use case.

What you can draw

The editor deliberately restricts your toolset. Instead of freehand curves or arbitrary shapes, you work with three primitives:

  • Horizontal lines — straight segments running left to right along the grid.
  • Vertical lines — straight segments running top to bottom along the grid.
  • Quarter circles — 90-degree arcs that connect grid points and let you round off corners or build circular forms.

Because everything snaps to a grid, shapes stay aligned and compositions remain clean without manual pixel-pushing.

How it works

  1. Open minimator in a browser (desktop or mobile).
  2. Wait for the editor to load — the page shows a loading state before the canvas appears.
  3. Draw by placing lines on the grid, choosing between horizontal, vertical, or quarter-circle segments.
  4. Combine segments to form letters, icons, diagrams, or abstract patterns.

The grid is the core constraint: it defines where lines can start and end, so the output is consistent and reproducible.

When to use it

minimator suits tasks where simplicity is the point:

  • Sketching geometric icons or logos
  • Making clean line diagrams for documentation
  • Practicing grid-based design on a phone or tablet
  • Prototyping layouts where only straight lines and arcs are needed

It is less suitable when you need freeform curves, gradients, raster painting, or precise typographic control — those fall outside its line-and-grid model.

Key limitations to know

  • No freehand drawing. All strokes must be horizontal, vertical, or quarter-circle arcs.
  • Grid-bound output. You cannot place lines at arbitrary angles or positions off the grid.
  • Browser-based. It runs in the browser and on the go; there is no indication of a downloadable desktop app.

If your goal is quick, minimal, grid-aligned graphics, minimator gives you exactly that and nothing more.
