What Is Minnesota Wisconsin Collie Rescue (MWCR)?
Updated
mwcr.org is the home page of Minnesota Wisconsin Collie Rescue (MWCR), a 501(c)3 non-profit charitable organization run by volunteers and dedicated to the care of rough and smooth Collies. It rescues Collies that have lost their homes, places them in foster homes, provides medical care, assesses their traits and personalities, and works to find the best possible adoptive match before placing them in forever homes. Donations to MWCR are tax deductible, and the organization holds Wisconsin dog license #268673-DS.
What MWCR does
The mission described on the site follows a clear sequence:
- Rescue Collies who have lost their homes.
- Foster them with volunteer foster homes.
- Provide medical care while in foster care.
- Assess traits and personalities to understand each dog.
- Match and place each Collie in a loving forever home.
MWCR accepts rough and smooth Collies and may accept Collie mixes on a space-available basis — so a mix is possible but not guaranteed.
Where it operates
Volunteers and foster homes are located in Minnesota and Wisconsin and several other states. Placements are not limited to the region: the site notes Collies have been placed from New York to Texas to California to Canada, as well as locally.
Ways to get involved
The home page points to several paths for supporters:
- Adopt — view the Collies currently available (the page lists dogs such as Rupert, Cotton (Parker), and Archie (Dooley), each marked available with age and coat details).
- Foster — open a home to a Collie awaiting placement.
- Donate — contributions are tax deductible.
- Volunteer — the organization is volunteer-run.
- Membership — new members can join and existing members can renew.
- Events — MWCR's 2026 Annual Dinner and Fundraiser is scheduled for Saturday, October 24, 4–8 pm, at the Radisson Hotel on Harborview Plaza in La Crosse, WI, with guest speaker Barbara O'Brien, photographer and host of The Empathetic Trainer podcast.
- Calendars — 2027 Collie Calendars are available for purchase.
Is MWCR the right place for you?
If you are looking to adopt or rehome a rough or smooth Collie in the Upper Midwest — or are open to a Collie mix on a space-available basis — MWCR's adoption and foster applications are the natural starting points. If you want to support Collie rescue without adopting, donating, volunteering, membership, and the annual dinner are the listed options. For anyone outside Minnesota and Wisconsin, placements in other states and Canada show that geography alone does not rule out adoption, though the volunteer and foster base remains concentrated in the Upper Midwest.
