What Is OrchidWire?

Updated

OrchidWire is a human-curated directory of orchid-related content online, organized by category and geography so you can find growers, societies, and vendors without digging through search results. It has been running since 1996 and was last updated on January 19, 2025. It is most useful when you want a browsable index of orchid organizations, sellers, and other resources rather than articles, care guides, or a shop of its own.

What you'll find on the site

The directory is split into broad groups, each with a running count on the homepage:

Group Listings shown
Organizations 625
Vendors 842
Others 393

"Organizations" covers societies and clubs, "Vendors" covers businesses that sell orchids or related goods, and "Others" collects remaining orchid-related resources. The site also exposes Category, Wild, and Genus navigation, so browsing can start from a topic or plant group instead of a country.

Browsing by country

Most of the directory is organized geographically, which makes it practical for finding something local or checking what exists in a specific market. The country list is long and unevenly distributed — the United States has by far the most entries (558), followed by Australia (174), Brazil (125), Germany (101), Japan (97), France (79), Canada (64), the United Kingdom (61), and the Netherlands (46). Smaller counts include places like Cambodia (1), Iran (1), Jamaica (1), Kenya (1), Mauritius (1), Montenegro (1), Nepal (1), and Uganda (1). There is also an "International (8)" grouping for entries that don't sit in a single country.

That spread tells you two things: coverage is genuinely global, but it is thin in many countries, so a low number doesn't mean no orchid activity there — only that the directory lists little for it.

How to use it

  1. Pick an entry point: a country, a category, or a genus.
  2. Scan the listing for the organization or vendor you want.
  3. Follow the link out to that group's or business's own site — OrchidWire is an index, so the actual contact details, opening hours, and stock live on the destination page.
  4. Check the "Updated on January 19, 2025" note before treating a listing as current, and verify anything time-sensitive directly with the source.

What it is not

OrchidWire does not sell plants itself, and the site's own pages don't present pricing, membership terms, or login requirements. Treat it as a starting point for research: useful for discovering who exists in the orchid world and where, less useful if you need detailed cultivation advice or a direct purchase. Because entries are human-curated, expect gaps and occasional stale links — cross-check before relying on any single listing.
