What Is Press🏴☠️Released?

Updated

Press🏴‍☠️Released is a web-based article reader that loads news articles and attempts to display their full content by bypassing paywalls. It is intended for reading articles that would otherwise be cut off behind a subscription prompt. The page describes itself as built for educational purposes and advises readers to respect content creators and subscribe to publications they read regularly.

What the tool does

The page presents a single working area labeled "📰 Article Content," which loads the requested article and shows it in a reader view. Around that core function, it exposes a few controls and status indicators:

  • Paywall Bypass Mode — the main mode for retrieving article text.
  • Alternative services — links out to Archive.today, Archive.org, and Smry.ai for cases where the primary method fails.
  • Queue status — shows whether a request is idle or processing.
  • Bypass Paywalls Clean rules — displays when the underlying rule set was last updated.
  • Reader display options — Original, Clear, and Dark themes, plus A− / 100% / A+ text sizing and a Reset button.

How it works

The tool is described as inspired by and built on two existing projects: Magnolia1234's BypassPaywallsClean browser extension and Danny-Dasilva's CycleTLS. In practice this means it applies community-maintained bypass rules to fetch article content and render it in a clean reading layout, rather than requiring you to install a browser extension yourself.

What to expect when you use it

  1. Enter or open the article you want to read through the tool.
  2. The page attempts to load the content; the queue indicator shows whether the request is idle or in progress.
  3. If it succeeds, the article appears in the reader area, where you can switch between Original, Clear, and Dark views and adjust text size.
  4. If it fails, the alternative services (Archive.today, Archive.org, Smry.ai) are offered as fallbacks.

Two things worth knowing before relying on it: the bypass rules are only as current as their last update, so newer paywall implementations may not be covered, and the page itself carries a disclaimer that it is for educational purposes only.
