What is Remarkbox?

Updated

Remarkbox is a hosted comment service that you embed in your pages so readers can discuss your content. It is aimed at sites that have no built-in commenting — most notably static sites — and it is open source, ad-free, and tracking-free. If you run a static blog or a fast, minimal site and want comments without slowing your pages down or handing your readers to an ad network, Remarkbox is built for exactly that situation.

The problem it solves

Static sites are fast, but they have no native comment system. The usual fix is to bolt on a third-party widget, and that choice has consequences:

  • Page speed. A page is only as fast as its slowest resource, so a heavy comment widget can undo the speed gains you got from going static.
  • Search ranking. Search engines rank using page load speeds, so a slow widget works against you.
  • Business model mismatch. Free comment systems often prioritize ad revenue over page speed, which can mean ads on your pages and traffic being pulled away from your site.

Remarkbox positions itself against all three: it is optimized for speed, takes a minimalist approach by default, and is designed to feel like part of your site rather than something bolted on.

Who it is for

Remarkbox fits you if:

  • You moved to a static site for speed and still want reader discussion.
  • You want comments that look and feel native to your pages.
  • You care about page load speed and search ranking.
  • You prefer no ads and no tracking on your content.

It is a weaker fit if you want a large, feature-heavy community platform out of the box, or if you need a fully managed enterprise support arrangement.

Background

Founder Russell Ballestrini started building Remarkbox in 2014, after moving a WordPress blog to a static site and finding that the embedded comment systems he evaluated would either slow his site down or serve ads. He launched it roughly three years later. Remarkbox powers its own FAQ and Meta sites, which double as live examples of the service in action.

How to try it

The site offers a demo — you can scroll to the bottom of the Remarkbox homepage to see the comment system running on the page itself. Setup instructions are published, and the service advertises a risk-free namespace with no credit card required. Pricing is presented as "pay what you can," starting at $0/mo for one moderator across a few domains with full control over behavior and appearance; the stated model relies on reciprocity and trust rather than a fixed price.
