EnglishWhat Is /r/vn's 2018 Recommendation Chart?
Updated
/r/vn's 2018 Recommendation Chart is a community-made visual novel recommendation list hosted at vnrecs.github.io. It presents a curated set of visual novels organized into categories, with each entry giving a short premise and genre tags. It is most useful if you are new to visual novels and want a starting point, or if you want a quick overview of titles the /r/visualnovel community highlighted in 2018.
What the chart contains
The page is built around two main groupings: a "Gateway and Beginner Novels" section and "Top Picks from /r/visualnovel." Each title is listed with a brief description and its genres.
Gateway and Beginner Novels
These are positioned as accessible entry points. The chart includes:

How to use it
- Open vnrecs.github.io.
- Read the premise and genre tags for each title.
- Pick a title whose genres match what you already like — for example, choose Steins;Gate if you want suspense and sci-fi, or Katawa Shoujo if you want romance and slice of life.
- Use the descriptions as a first filter, then look up the title elsewhere for length, platform, and content details before committing.
What it does not tell you
The chart gives premises and genres, but the page evidence does not include ratings values, release platforms, playtime, or pricing. It also does not state whether any title is free or requires a purchase or login. Treat the chart as a discovery aid, not a buying or compatibility guide.
Who it is for
- Newcomers who want a shortlist of well-known visual novels.
- Readers who prefer genre-first browsing over long reviews.
- Anyone curious about what the /r/visualnovel community recommended in 2018.
If you already know the medium well, the chart is more of a snapshot than a deep resource; its value is in the concise premise-plus-genre format for quick decisions.
