What Is Somerbosch Wines?

Updated

Somerbosch Wines is a working wine farm at the foothills of the Helderberg Mountain, between Stellenbosch and Somerset West in South Africa's Western Cape. It has been in the Roux family for more than half a century and has produced wine under the Somerbosch name since 1995. Beyond wine, the estate runs a bistro and deli, offers wine tasting, hosts events and functions, and sells wine online.

Where It Is and Who Runs It

The farm sits between two historic towns and benefits from a cool Atlantic breeze alongside other terroir elements, which the estate credits for the character of its wines. Winemaking is led by brothers Japie and Marius Roux, who have been crafting wines there since 1995. The estate describes itself as relaxed and intimate rather than large-scale, and it is a working farm — vineyards are tended year-round and the grapes for the wines come from its own vineyards.

The Wines

Somerbosch produces a range across styles:

  • Red wines, including Cabernet Sauvignon, described as bold and elegant
  • White wines, including Sauvignon Blanc, described as refreshing
  • Rosé
  • MCC (Méthode Cap Classique, South Africa's traditional-method sparkling wine)

The portfolio also includes a limited-edition wine called Somerbosch Kylix, released only in vintages "dictated by nature" and made with the serious collector in mind. The estate describes its core style as fresh and approachable, aimed at a wide range of palates, and says its wines have earned recognition internationally.

Beyond the Cellar Door

Wine is only part of what the farm offers. The site is organised around several areas:

Offering What it involves
Bistro & Deli A menu of dishes built on fresh ingredients and unusual flavour combinations, led by chef Zenta, with a menu that changes over time
Wine Tasting A tasting experience on the farm
Buy Wine Online purchase of the estate's wines (the site shows a cart in rand)
Events & Functions Hosting of private and group events on the property

Who It Suits

Somerbosch fits two kinds of visitors well: people who want a focused wine-farm stop in the Stellenbosch–Somerset West corridor, and people who want a longer visit combining tasting with a meal at the bistro. Because it is a working family farm with a small-team feel, it is less suited to anyone looking for a large commercial estate experience.

If you are planning around the wine alone, the key things to know are the style (fresh, approachable, with a limited-edition flagship) and the range (red, white, rosé and MCC). If you are planning a visit, check the site's Wine Tasting, Bistro and Events sections for current arrangements before travelling, since opening details and menus are not fixed on the page itself.
