What Is Stratford Chess Club?
Updated
Stratford Chess Club is a chess club based in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, that meets in person every Tuesday evening from 19:30 at Venture House, Avenue Farm Industrial Estate, Birmingham Rd, Stratford-upon-Avon CV37 0HR. It also runs an online tournament on chess.com every Thursday at 19:00. The club welcomes players of all strengths — from complete beginners to Grandmasters — and offers friendly games, internal club competitions, and teams that play against other chess clubs.
Where and when the club meets
| Format | Day | Time | Location |
|---|---|---|---|
| In-person club night | Tuesday | 19:30 onwards | Venture House, Avenue Farm Industrial Estate, Birmingham Rd, Stratford-upon-Avon CV37 0HR |
| Online tournament | Thursday | 19:00 | chess.com (Swiss-style, 3 rounds) |
The Tuesday session is the main weekly gathering and the point of contact for anyone new. The Thursday online event is a separate way to play if you cannot attend in person or want extra games during the week.
What you can do at the club
The club is structured around three levels of play, so you can choose how involved you want to be:
- Friendly games — casual chess with other members, no competition pressure.
- Club competitions — internal events for members who want rated or scored games.
- Team chess — representing Stratford Chess Club against other clubs in league play.
For the 2026–27 season the club fields four teams (A, B, C and D) in the LDCL (Leicestershire & District Chess League), with named captains for each squad. That means there is a place for a range of playing strengths, not just the strongest players.
Who can join
New members are explicitly welcome regardless of ability. The club's own wording is that "it doesn't matter whether you are a beginner or a Grandmaster." You do not need a rating or prior club experience to start with friendly games on a Tuesday.
How to get involved
- Decide which session suits you — Tuesday in person, Thursday online, or both.
- Turn up on a Tuesday from 19:30, or join the Thursday chess.com tournament at 19:00.
- To join formally or ask questions first, email [email protected].
The club also maintains a membership section on its website covering membership details and an application form, plus a members login area.
Practical notes
- Membership subscriptions are handled by the club treasurer, and bank transfer is stated as the preferred payment method. The site does not publish subscription amounts, so ask via the admin email for current fees.
- Fixtures and results for the 2026–27 season are published on the club site, along with club policies and directions.
- External events are sometimes promoted to members — for example, the ECF- and FIDE-rated Coventry Rapidplay on Sunday 18 October, with entries handled through a separate tournament website.
If your goal is simply to play chess regularly in or around Stratford-upon-Avon, the Tuesday club night is the direct route in; if you want competitive chess, the internal competitions and the four league teams are the next step.
