What is Swaffham Museum?
Updated
Swaffham Museum is a small, independent museum in Swaffham, Norfolk, covering the social history of the town and surrounding villages from the Stone Age to the present day. It is run by volunteers and financed through small entry fees and donations. It is also the place to go for local visitor information: the museum entrance houses a gift shop and the Swaffham Information Centre, which offers event-booking services.
What the museum covers
The displays and site sections are organised around local history and local people:
- Social history — everyday life in Swaffham and nearby villages across the centuries.
- Town stories — the town's own narratives and characters.
- The Pedlar — the legend of the Pedlar of Swaffham and his dog.
- Archaeology — finds and evidence from the area's distant past.
- Howard Carter — the archaeologist best known for the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb, who was born in London but raised in Swaffham.
- The Workhouse — the history of the local workhouse.
- War Room — a dedicated space on the town's wartime history.
- Other local figures — Admiral of the Fleet Sir Knyvet Wilson VC, prize fighter Jem Mace, and W.E. Johns, author of the Biggles books.
There is also an education service for schools and the local community, and research facilities — maps, books, documentation and artefacts — available by appointment for personal and group research.

When it is the right place to look
- You want local history rather than a national collection. The scope is deliberately local — Swaffham and its villages — so it suits family-history visitors, school groups and people researching the town.
- You need visitor information or event tickets. The information centre inside the entrance handles visitor and resident enquiries and event bookings.
- You are planning research. Access to maps, books, documents and artefacts is by appointment, so contact the museum before travelling if your visit depends on a specific archive.
- You have mobility needs. The ground floor is usable, but upper floors are not wheelchair accessible; plan around that if the galleries you want are upstairs.
The museum also welcomes new volunteers and provides application forms on request.
