What is Swing Music (swingmx.com)?
Updated
Swing Music is a self-hosted music streaming server. You run it on your own machine or server, point it at your own music files, and stream them through a modern web interface. It is not a music service that provides songs — you bring your own library. The project is open source under AGPL-3.0 and is built by Mungai Njoroge.
What it actually does
The core idea is a Spotify-like experience applied to music you already own. According to the site, it is "like a cooler Spotify, but you bring your own music."
Key capabilities listed on the homepage:
- Clean, sleek UI — a streamlined interface for browsing and playing your library.
- Folder browser — navigate your collection by folder structure rather than relying only on tags.
- Recommendations & Mixes (marked PRO) — suggestions for related artists, tracks, and albums based on listening activity.
- Listening stats — history and insights into your listening habits.
- Fuzzy search — tolerates typos and misspellings.
- Duplicate handling — detects and hides duplicate tracks, preferring the highest bitrate version.
- Collections — group albums, artists, and other items onto a single page, described as "like a playlist, but for larger items."
The interface also includes views for albums, artists, now playing, lyrics, favorites, and collections.
How you run it
Swing Music is self-hosted, so you need somewhere to run it — a Linux or Mac machine, a Docker host, or a system where you can run a portable binary.
One-command install (Linux or Mac / Apple Silicon):
curl -fsSL http://setup.swingmx.com | bash
Docker Compose:
services:
swingmusic:
image: ghcr.io/swingmx/swingmusic:latest
container_name: swingmusic
ports:
- "1970:1970"
volumes:
- /path/to/music:/music
- /path/to/config:/config
environment:
- SWINGMUSIC_PORT=1970
- SWINGMUSIC_DEVICE_NAME=Host name here
restart: unless-stopped
The same image is available via Docker CLI, and portable binaries are offered for Linux, Windows, and Mac.
Two things to note in the Docker setup: your music directory is mounted at /music and config at /config, so replace those paths with your own. The service listens on port 1970 by default.
Who it is for
Swing Music fits if you have a local music collection and want to stream it to yourself with a polished interface, without uploading it to a third-party service. It is less relevant if you do not maintain your own music files, since it does not supply music.
The project describes itself as "still a young project" with more features planned, so expect ongoing development rather than a finished, static product.
