What Is the Better Lyrics Extension for YouTube Music and What Does It Do?
Better Lyrics is a browser extension that upgrades YouTube Music with time-synced lyrics, real-time translations and transliterations, click-to-seek navigation, and customizable themes. It's aimed at anyone who listens to YouTube Music regularly and wants lyrics that follow the song line by line instead of static text. It works out of the box with no setup required, and the site lists it as both a Chrome extension and a Firefox addon.
What Better Lyrics actually adds
The extension layers a lyrics experience on top of the YouTube Music player. According to the site, the core additions are:
- Time-synced lyrics — lines highlight and follow along as the song plays, rather than appearing as a static block.
- Seek by clicking lyrics — click any line to jump to that part of the song, so you can navigate a track through its lyrics instead of dragging the progress bar.
- Real-time translations and transliterations — lyrics display in any language, with translations and transliterations available as needed. This is the feature one user highlighted for singing Japanese songs without worrying about kanji and hiragana.
- Themes — built-in themes plus customization, including community-made themes. The site notes that its dynamic background themes use "Better Lyrics Shaders."
- Lightweight performance — the site states it runs smoothly without impacting performance.
How it differs from YouTube Music's built-in lyrics
YouTube Music already shows lyrics for many tracks, so the question is what changes. The site's own framing is that Better Lyrics is meant to "step up" the existing experience, and one user comment describes it as working "as well (or even better) than YTM's lyrics."
The concrete differences the site claims:
| Aspect | Built-in YouTube Music lyrics | Better Lyrics |
|---|---|---|
| Sync | Varies by track | Time-synced lines that follow playback |
| Navigation | Progress bar only | Click a lyric line to seek to it |
| Language help | Not a core feature | Real-time translations and transliterations |
| Appearance | Fixed player styling | Built-in and community themes, customizable |
| Setup | None | None — works out of the box |
If you only need to read lyrics occasionally, the built-in option may be enough. If you want the lyrics to track the song, jump around by line, or read translations while listening, that's where the extension's value sits.
Zero setup vs. customization
The site emphasizes "Zero Setup Required" — smart defaults mean it works immediately after install, and everything beyond that is optional. So you don't need to configure anything to get synced lyrics; theming and language options are there if you want them.
How to install and start using it
- Go to the Better Lyrics site (betterlyrics.org) and choose the build for your browser — Chrome extension or Firefox addon.
- Install it through your browser's extension/addon flow.
- Open YouTube Music and play a song. Lyrics should appear synced to playback without further configuration.
- Optional: open the extension's settings to switch themes or enable translations/transliterations.
- To test seek-by-click, click a lyric line and confirm playback jumps to that point.
Expected result: lyrics that highlight in time with the track, clickable for navigation, styled according to your chosen theme.
Common snags to expect: not every track has synced lyrics available, so some songs may fall back to unsynced or missing lyrics; and because it's a browser extension, it only affects YouTube Music in the browser where it's installed, not the mobile app.
Is it worth installing?
The site's user testimonials — which are explicitly flagged as possibly coming from people close to the developer, so treat them as marketing rather than independent reviews — describe it as a "must have" for heavy YouTube Music listeners and "a much needed extension." The honest read: if synced lyrics, translations, and visual customization matter to you, it's a low-commitment install with no setup cost. If you're satisfied with YouTube Music's default lyrics and don't need translation or theming, there's little it adds.
