What Is the Difference Between SD Maid 1 and SD Maid 2/SE?
Updated
SD Maid 2/SE is the successor to SD Maid 1. SD Maid 1 (also called SD Maid 1/Legacy) will keep working as it is, but it will not receive new features or improvements — updates are limited to security fixes. If you are choosing between the two, SD Maid 2/SE is the version under active development, while SD Maid 1 is effectively in maintenance mode.
How the two versions differ
| Aspect | SD Maid 1 (Legacy) | SD Maid 2/SE |
|---|---|---|
| Status | Keeps working as it is | Successor to SD Maid 1 |
| New features | None | Active development |
| Improvements | None | Ongoing |
| Updates | Security fixes only | Not limited to security fixes |
| Issue tracking | Tickets being reviewed and migrated where applicable | Has its own issue tracker |
| Help resources | Help page for SD Maid 1 | Has its own FAQ |
The page describes SD Maid as "an Android app that helps you manage files and apps," and that description applies to both versions.
What this means for choosing a version
- If you want new features and improvements, use SD Maid 2/SE. SD Maid 1 will not get them.
- If you already use SD Maid 1, you can keep using it — it will keep working as it is. Just don't expect anything beyond security fixes.
- If you need help or want to report a bug, note that the two versions have separate resources: SD Maid 2/SE has its own FAQ and issue tracker, while SD Maid 1 has its own help page and issue tracker.
Where to get each version
The SD Maid 1 page lists downloads for both production and beta builds, on Google Play and GitHub, plus a Pro Version Unlocker on Google Play:
- Production: SD Maid — Google Play, SD Maid — GitHub
- Pro Version Unlocker — Google Play
- Beta: SD Maid — Google Play, SD Maid — GitHub, Pro Version Unlocker — Google Play
For SD Maid 2/SE, the page points to its own FAQ and issue tracker rather than listing downloads directly.
Reporting bugs and requesting features
For SD Maid 1, the preferred way to report a bug or request a feature is through the issue tracker. The page also notes that SD Maid 1 issue tickets are being reviewed and migrated to SD Maid 2/SE where applicable, so a ticket you file for SD Maid 1 may end up tracked under SD Maid 2/SE instead.
