What Is the Difference Between the HDL Leaderboard and Record Pages?
Updated
The HDL Leaderboard and the Record page serve two different purposes on the Hard Demon List (HDL) site. The Leaderboard ranks players by their submitted and accepted achievements, while the Record page is where individual level completions are submitted and tracked. In short: the Leaderboard shows who is performing best overall, and the Record page handles what specific completions back that ranking up.
The HDL Leaderboard: Player Rankings
The Leaderboard is the ranking view of HDL. It aggregates accepted records into a player standing, so it answers "how do players compare against each other?"
- Focus: players, not levels. It orders people rather than listing individual completions.
- Input: only records that have already been submitted and accepted. A completion that hasn't gone through the Record process won't affect a player's position.
- Use case: checking where a player stands, comparing progress between players, or seeing who has accumulated the strongest verified results.
Because it depends on accepted records, the Leaderboard is a downstream view. It reflects the Record page's data rather than generating its own.
The Record Page: Individual Completions
The Record page is the submission and tracking side. It deals with specific level completions rather than aggregate player standing.
- Focus: individual records tied to specific levels.
- Action: this is where you submit a record, which then goes through review before it can count toward anything else.
- Use case: documenting a completion, tracking progress on particular hard demons, and feeding verified results into the ranking system.
The HDL site navigation includes a Submit entry alongside List, Leaderboard, Packs, and Roulette, which reflects this split: submission is its own step, separate from viewing rankings.
How They Connect
The two pages form a pipeline rather than competing features:
| Leaderboard | Record | |
|---|---|---|
| Unit | Player | Individual completion |
| Question answered | Who ranks where | What was completed |
| Data source | Accepted records | Submitted records |
| Depends on review | Yes (indirectly) | Yes (directly) |
- A player completes a level and submits it through the Record flow.
- The submission is reviewed.
- Once accepted, the record can contribute to that player's Leaderboard position.
So if a record is pending or rejected, it appears in neither the ranking nor as a counted result. The Leaderboard is effectively the summary; the Record page is the source.
Which One Should You Use?
- Use the Leaderboard when you want to compare players or check overall standing.
- Use the Record page when you want to submit a completion or look at specific level records.
If you're trying to understand why a player's rank doesn't match what you expect, check the Record side first — the Leaderboard only reflects what has been submitted and accepted there.
