What Is the History of Frutiger Aero?
Updated
Frutiger Aero was the dominant technology and graphic design aesthetic from the mid-2000s until roughly 2013, when it fell out of fashion. It had no name during its own peak—critics usually called its web version "the Web 2.0 style"—and the label "Frutiger Aero" was only coined retrospectively in 2017 by Sofi Xian of the Consumer Aesthetics Research Institute. The Frutiger Aero Archive covers this history in a dedicated History section, alongside collections of the era's wallpapers, music, videos, flash games, and customization software.
Where the name comes from
The term is a compound of two references:
- Frutiger — the typeface designed by Adrian Frutiger, which inspired many humanist sans-serif fonts used on computers in the early 2000s, including Microsoft's Segoe UI.
- Aero — the visual design and user experience guidelines of Windows Vista. The acronym stands for "Authentic, Energetic, Reflective, and Open."
Timeline of the aesthetic
| Period | What happened |
|---|---|
| Around 2000 | Apple's Aqua style brings skeuomorphism—the mimicking of real-life objects—to the Mac OS X interface and the Apple website |
| Mid-2000s | The style spreads across technology and graphic design; it becomes the main visual language of the new social web |
| Mid-2000s to 2013 | Peak popularity, later described as the era of Frutiger Aero |
| Around 2013 | The aesthetic declines and falls out of use |
| 2017 | Sofi Xian coins the term "Frutiger Aero" retrospectively |
How it relates to Y2K and Web 2.0
Frutiger Aero succeeded the Y2K style, which was named after the Year 2000 problem. Where Web 1.0 meant static websites, the new social web of Web 2.0 adopted this glossy, humanist look as its default visual style—which is why critics of the time reached for "the Web 2.0 style" rather than any aesthetic name.
Where you would have seen it
The style appeared across consumer technology and media of the period, including:
- The glossy interfaces of Windows Vista and Windows 7
- The PS Vita, Wii, Wii U, and PlayStation 3
- Advertisements and stock images
- Certain toys, such as the iDog by Hasbro
Defining characteristics
Its main traits are bright and vibrant colors, glossy textures, glass and transparent materials, aurora borealis imagery, skeuomorphism, bubbles, bokeh, macro photographs of grass, futurism, and humanism.
Going deeper
The Frutiger Aero Archive describes itself as a digital museum and tribute to old 2000s aesthetics—primarily Frutiger Aero, but also Y2K, Vectordelia (also called Frutiger Metro), and others.
