What Is the IEM Plug-in Suite?

Updated

The IEM Plug-in Suite is a free and open-source collection of audio plugins built around Ambisonics, supporting up to 7th-order spatial audio. It is created by staff and students of the Institute of Electronic Music and Acoustics (IEM). If you work with surround or spatial audio and want a no-cost, source-available toolkit, this suite is aimed at you. The current release listed on the site is v1.16.0 (30th September 2026), with download, release page, and source code links provided.

What the suite is

  • Free and open-source: The suite is described as free and Open-Source, with source code available.
  • Ambisonic focus: It includes Ambisonic plugins up to 7th order.
  • Origin: Developed by staff and students of the Institute of Electronic Music and Acoustics.

Featured plugins

The site highlights several plugins that show the range of the suite:

Plugin What it does
DualDelay A delay plugin reworked for composers and musicians, adding sync-to-DAW, a tap delay button, and BPM-based timing with multipliers instead of milliseconds. It supports rotation and warping of the signal.
GranularEncoder An Ambisonic granular synthesis plugin. It can take any mono or stereo audio signal and turn it into an enveloping sound scene or break it into microscopic sonic particles.
MultiBandCompressor A mastering-stage tool that works like a stereo multi-band compressor but preserves the spatial image. The Ambisonic input is split into four bands that can be compressed individually.
StereoEncoder Encodes mono or stereo signals into the Ambisonic domain up to 7th order. You can set orientation, width, and rotation of the stereo pair. Double-clicking the SpherePanner switches to linear elevation for higher accuracy near the horizon, and a Quaternion input lets you use orientation trackers (such as headtrackers) to steer the source.
RoomEncoder Described as the most complex and computation-intensive plugin in the suite. It places a source and a listener in a virtual shoebox-shaped room and renders over 200 wall reflections, useful for enhancing externalization in binaural playback. Source and listener can be moved freely within the room.

Version and compatibility notes

The site flags breaking changes in versions v1.16.0, v1.15.0, and v1.3.0. Projects made with earlier versions might not work as expected. Before upgrading, check the Breaking changes article and the ChangeLog referenced on the site.

How to get it

The site provides three entry points:

  • Download — for the plugin suite itself.
  • Release Page — for release information.
  • Source Code — for the open-source codebase.

Who it is for

Choose the IEM Plug-in Suite if you need Ambisonic processing up to 7th order and prefer a free, open-source toolset maintained by an academic institution. Be aware of the breaking changes across recent versions if you are opening older projects, and review the ChangeLog before updating.
