What is the Ontario Universities' Application Centre (OUAC)?
Updated
OUAC (ouac.on.ca) is the central application processing service for Ontario's universities. It collects and transmits applications for undergraduate and professional programs, but it does not decide who gets admitted — that decision belongs to each university. Use OUAC when you need to apply to one or more Ontario universities through a single application rather than applying to each school separately.
What OUAC handles
According to the site's own description, OUAC "processes undergraduate and professional applications for admission to Ontario's universities." In practice that means two broad application streams:
- Undergraduate applications — the main route for students applying to bachelor's-level programs at Ontario universities.
- Professional applications — separate application processes for professional degree programs, which OUAC also processes.
The site is the entry point for understanding the application process: which application to use, what information is required, and how to submit and pay.
What OUAC does not do
A common point of confusion is the division of responsibility:
| Task | Handled by |
|---|---|
| Receiving and forwarding your application | OUAC |
| Deciding on admission and sending offers | Each university |
| Setting program requirements and deadlines | Each university |
| Processing application payments | OUAC (see its Payment FAQ section) |
So a submitted OUAC application is a delivery mechanism, not an admissions decision. Once your application is transmitted, the universities you selected review it and communicate outcomes directly.
How to use the site
- Identify your applicant type. Confirm whether you are applying as an undergraduate or to a professional program, since these use different application processes.
- Choose the correct application. Follow the site's guidance for your stream rather than assuming one form covers everything.
- Prepare your details and program choices. You will need your academic information and the universities/programs you intend to apply to.
- Submit and pay. Payment is handled through OUAC; the site maintains a Payment FAQ category for questions about fees and transactions.
- Verify transmission. After submission, confirm your application has been forwarded, then watch for communication from each university.
Expected result: your application reaches the selected Ontario universities, and each one then manages its own review and response.
Common sticking points
- Assuming OUAC admits students. It does not — direct admission questions to the university.
- Missing stream differences. Undergraduate and professional applications are distinct; using the wrong one delays your file.
- Overlooking payment steps. Payment is part of the OUAC process; check the Payment FAQ section rather than assuming a submission is complete without it.
- Treating the site as a single-school portal. OUAC is a shared, multi-university service, so one application can cover multiple choices.
When OUAC is the right starting point
Use ouac.on.ca if you are applying to Ontario universities and want one coordinated application channel, or if you need to understand which application stream applies to you. If you already have a specific admission question — requirements, deadlines, or your file's status — that belongs with the individual university, not OUAC.
