What is the Redding Garden Club?

Updated

The Redding Garden Club (RGC) is a community garden organization founded in 1964 with a mission centered on horticulture, conservation, and the artistic use of plant material. According to the club's website, it welcomes gardeners of all interests and skill levels and is active in the Redding community through public gardens, education programs, youth activities, and scholarships.

Mission and History

The club was founded in 1964 "to stimulate interest in and knowledge of horticulture, to assist the town in its conservation activities, to aid in the protection of native trees, birds and wildflowers, and to increase the knowledge of the artistic use of plant material."

The RGC reports having won multiple state and national awards for conservation, horticulture, and floral design, and describes itself as a community leader in pollinator, native, and invasive plant education.

Meetings

The club meets monthly from September through May, except in November and December. Meetings include a light lunch and a guest speaker, and guests are always welcome. The website's Meetings & Events section also lists board meetings and upcoming events.

Membership

The club frames membership around three benefits:

  • Garden – Help plant and maintain container and public roadside gardens; no experience necessary.
  • Learn – Hear expert speakers on gardening, conservation, Audubon topics, landscape and flower design.
  • Grow – Join field trips, find planting solutions, try floral design, take part in youth and community activities, and access workshops and design programs.

Membership details and forms are available through the club's Membership and Volunteer Forms pages.

Activities

The RGC lists the following among its community activities:

  • Maintaining over 15 public garden sites
  • Offering conservation and education programs
  • Holding an annual spring plant sale
  • Conducting youth programs
  • Awarding scholarships
  • Sponsoring field trips

The site also names specific programs and events, including Civic Beautification, Conservation, Blooming Books, Exhibits, Field Trips, Garden Therapy, Garden Tour, Luncheon & Boutique, Plant Sale, and Pumpkins on the Green.
