What is the Society for Germanic Linguistics (SGL)?

Updated

The Society for Germanic Linguistics (SGL) is a scholarly organization founded in 1968, described on its website as the largest and most active organization in North America serving the community of scholars who teach and research in Germanic linguistics and philology. It is relevant to you if you work on the linguistics, philology, texts, or manuscripts of Germanic languages and want a professional body that publishes a quarterly journal, runs an annual conference, and connects an international membership.

What the SGL covers

The Society's scope is deliberately broad. Its international membership spans all areas of and approaches to Germanic linguistics and philology, from formal syntax and phonology through historical linguistics to textual editing.

The languages its members investigate include:

  • Modern German
  • Dutch
  • Yiddish
  • The Scandinavian languages
  • Afrikaans
  • Pennsylvania German
  • English before 1500
  • Gothic

It also covers texts and manuscripts in these languages, which is why the Society describes itself as serving both linguistics and philology.

Main activities

Journal of Germanic Linguistics (JGL)

The Society publishes the Journal of Germanic Linguistics, which appears quarterly. The journal is one of the two core activities the SGL lists, alongside its conference.

Germanic Linguistics Annual Conference (GLAC)

The international Germanic Linguistics Annual Conference (GLAC) is held each spring under the auspices of the Society. If you want to present work or meet the membership in person, this is the recurring event to watch.

Leadership and governance

The Society lists its officers and Executive Committee publicly. For 2026, the leadership is:

Role Name Term
President Laura Catharine Smith 2025–2027
Vice-President Nick Henry 2026
Secretary Chris Sapp 2026–2028
Treasurer Carlee Arnett 2026–2028

Executive Committee members for 2026 include Andrew Kostakis (2026–2028), Erin Noelliste (2026–2028), Rose Fisher (2026), David Natvig (2024–2026), Katie Somers (2025–2027), and Björn Köhnlein (2025–2027). John Sundquist serves as Chair of the JGL Editorial Committee (ex officio).

The Society's Bylaws were last amended and ratified by the membership on April 30, 2021.

How to engage

The SGL website's main navigation points to the ways you can take part:

  • Journal — for the Journal of Germanic Linguistics and its editorial information
  • Conference — for GLAC, held each spring
  • Membership — to join the international membership
  • Contact — to reach the Society directly
  • About — for the Society's background, officers, and bylaws

If your goal is to publish, present, or connect with others working on Germanic languages and their texts, membership plus the journal and GLAC are the three entry points the Society itself foregrounds.
