What Is the World Gold Council and What Does It Do?
Updated
The World Gold Council (gold.org) is a gold industry organisation that positions itself as "the authority on gold." It publishes market research, demand and supply data, central bank holdings information, and analytical tools aimed primarily at professional investors, alongside advocacy work on responsible mining and ESG. It is a research and industry body, not a dealer: the site provides data and commentary, and does not itself sell gold or offer investment advice.
What the organisation covers
The Council's public output clusters into a few areas:
- Market research and commentary — regular analysis of what moves the gold price, including the Gold Market Commentary series. One example on the site attributes a September price decline to a surge in US Treasury yields and the US dollar alongside falling futures positions, even as gold ETF inflows were strong.
- Demand and supply statistics — historical demand and supply data, plus ETF flow reporting.
- Central bank data — holdings, sales and purchases, with accompanying insight.
- ETF flows — monthly and quarterly reporting on gold-backed exchange-traded funds.
- Industry and ESG work — responsible gold mining, gold and climate change, gold's contribution to society, and artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM).
Goldhub: the main data and research entry point
Goldhub is described on the site as "the definitive source of gold data, insights, and analytical tools for professional investors," available in both English and Chinese. If you want the Council's numbers rather than its narrative, this is where to start.
A worked example of what Goldhub-style reporting looks like: the September 2026 ETF report states that global gold-backed ETFs attracted US$10bn during the month, capping a record quarter of roughly US$31bn in inflows. All regions recorded inflows, led by North America and Europe. Total assets under management fell 7% month-on-month to US$574bn because of a lower gold price, while holdings rose 67t to a record 4,256t. Note how the two figures move in opposite directions — that distinction between flows/holdings and assets under management is the single most useful thing to understand when reading any ETF report.
Key initiatives
- Gold247 — a market infrastructure initiative.
- Digital Gold — work on digital gold infrastructure; the site frames it under "The Case for a Shared Infrastructure."
- Unearthed Podcast — the Council's interview/discussion format.
- Responsible Gold Mining — promoting high ESG standards across the gold supply chain.
How to use the site
- Decide what you need: a price reference, a data series, or an argument.
- For data and tools, go to Goldhub; for short-form market explanation, go to the research/commentary section.
- When reading a report, separate price effects from demand effects — as in the ETF example above, a falling price can shrink assets under management while holdings still rise.
- Check the publication date. The site's research is dated, and market commentary is written for the moment it was published.
What it is not
The Council's research and advocacy are not the same as buying gold. The site does not present itself as a dealer, and nothing in its commentary should be read as a personal recommendation to invest. Treat its output as industry-sponsored research: useful for data, framing and market structure, but produced by an organisation with an interest in gold's role as an asset. For decisions about holding gold, the Council's material is an input, not the answer.
