What Is US Sailing?

Updated

US Sailing is the national governing body for the sport of sailing in the United States. It sets the competitive framework for U.S. sailing, organizes and sanctions national championships, supports sailing programs and instructors, and recognizes major events—such as designating the Pineapple Cup–Montego Bay Race as US Sailing's US Open – Offshore. If you sail competitively, run a sailing program, coach, or follow U.S. national sailing, US Sailing is the organization that ties those activities together.

What US Sailing Does

Governs national competition

US Sailing runs and sanctions national championship events. Its 2026 U.S. Match Racing Championship, hosted with San Diego Yacht Club, brought 10 teams to San Diego Bay; William Stratton, Matei Meglic, and Sidney Gathrid won with a perfect 13–0 record and earned nomination to represent the United States at the 2027 Nations Cup in Cherbourg, France. National titles like this are the pathway to international representation.

Develops youth sailing and national teams

The 2026 U.S. Youth Championship and Nacra 15 North American Championship drew over 190 youth sailors competing for US Sailing's premier youth trophies and the right to represent the U.S. at the Youth Sailing World Championship. For young sailors, these events are the recognized route toward national team selection.

Supports programs, instructors, and industry leaders

US Sailing convenes sailing professionals, instructors, program directors, and industry leaders. Its National Sailing Programs Symposium (NSPS) is scheduled for January 21–23, 2027, in Fort Myers, Florida—three days of learning, networking, and idea-sharing for people who run sailing organizations.

Recognizes major events and honors

US Sailing can elevate an existing race to a national designation, as with the 36th Pineapple Cup–Montego Bay Race (Miami to Montego Bay, starting April 10, 2027, hosted by Biscayne Bay Yacht Club), which will be recognized as US Sailing's US Open – Offshore. It also administers the Rolex Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the Year awards, with nominations open for 2026.
