What is WebM for Lazys by Sebastián Λ?
Updated
WebM for Lazys is a Windows-oriented utility published by Sebastián Λ on 2020-10-05 that wraps ffmpeg and AviSynth so you can convert videos to WebM without typing command-line arguments. It also includes Gfycat integration, so the same workflow can produce a hosted, shareable clip. It is a good fit if you have a source video and want a WebM output but do not want to assemble an ffmpeg command by hand.
What it actually does
The project page describes it as "a wrapper around ffmpeg and AviSynth made for converting videos to WebM without having to use the command line and Gfycat integration."
That sentence contains the whole design:
- ffmpeg does the encoding. WebM is a container normally holding VP8/VP9 video and Vorbis/Opus audio, and ffmpeg is the standard tool for producing it.
- AviSynth handles frame serving and filtering before encoding. AviSynth is a script-driven frameserver, so the wrapper is effectively generating and running scripts on your behalf.
- The wrapper replaces the terminal. Instead of choosing codecs, bitrates, and filters as flags, you set them through the tool's own interface.
- Gfycat integration is a separate output path: instead of only writing a local
.webmfile, the result can be pushed to Gfycat for embedding or linking.
Who it is for
Use it if you meet these conditions:
- You are on Windows. AviSynth is a Windows frameserver, and the page gives no indication of a macOS or Linux build.
- You already have a source video file and want a WebM version of it.
- You would rather adjust settings in a GUI than write an ffmpeg command.
- You may want the result hosted on Gfycat rather than only saved locally.
Skip it if you need a cross-platform pipeline, if you want to script conversions in CI, or if you need codec and container control beyond what the wrapper exposes. In those cases, calling ffmpeg directly is the more predictable route.
How it relates to the rest of the site
argorar.github.io is the personal page of Sebastián Λ, and WebM for Lazys is one entry among several small tools and experiments. The same page lists:
| Project | What it is |
|---|---|
| Northwind Crud | CRUD for the Northwind database; ASP.NET Web API in C# with an Angular front end |
| Dowi - Download Image | Script adding a button to download images from Discord, Reddit, and Imgur (.jpg, .jpeg, .jpe, .gif, .png) |
| Cordic Graph | Material on the CORDIC algorithm for trigonometric and hyperbolic functions |
| Deep Dark | Flat, transparent GTK 3 and GNOME Shell theme |
| Network Watcher | Multiplatform local network scanner for hosts, open ports, and HTTP/SMTP/FTP services |
The pattern is consistent: small, single-purpose utilities, several of them built to remove a command-line step or add a convenience button to an existing workflow. WebM for Lazys is the video-conversion instance of that pattern.
Practical notes before you try it
- AviSynth must be installed and working. The wrapper depends on it, so a broken AviSynth install will surface as a conversion failure rather than a clear error.
- ffmpeg must be available. The wrapper calls it; it does not replace it.
- Gfycat integration is a hosted-service dependency. Anything that depends on an external upload service is subject to that service's availability and terms, which are outside the project's control.
- The page is from 2020. Treat the described behavior as the state of the tool at publication rather than a guarantee about its current condition.
If your goal is simply "get a WebM out of this video without learning ffmpeg flags," WebM for Lazys is aimed exactly at that. If your goal is a repeatable, scriptable conversion pipeline, the underlying ffmpeg and AviSynth tools it wraps are the better things to learn directly.
