What kind of golf course is Leven Links?
Updated
Leven Links is a traditional Scottish links course: rolling fairways lined by ancient sand dunes, fast putting surfaces, burns and pot bunkers. It suits golfers who want a genuine, historic links test rather than a modern resort-style layout, and it is playable for visitors who can handle wind, firm turf and classic pot-bunker trouble.
Course character
The course is described as a traditional links with rolling fairways, many lined by ancient sand dunes. The putting surfaces are fast, and the hazards are the classic links kind: burns and pot bunkers. That combination means the ball runs, the wind matters, and approach shots need to be judged along the ground as well as through the air.
It is not a long, soft, target-golf course. The challenge comes from the terrain, the bunkering and the speed of the greens.
History and standing
Leven Links is one of the very oldest links courses in Scotland, with golf dating back to the mid-1800s. It is thought to be the very first course in the world to feature 18 tees and 18 separate greens. It has been a six-time Open Championship final qualifying venue and still hosts leading amateur events and international matches.
Two clubs, Leven Golfing Society and Leven Thistle Golf Club, play over the links.
What players say
Visitor reviews describe it as a true links course that is entertaining and a fair test, with interesting holes and welcoming members. One reviewer called it a "hidden gem at a great price" and highlighted the views of the water and the community of Largo. Another noted that the 18th was fun but hard, playing into the wind and a little wet, which made it long.
