What kind of news and updates does ESA/Webb publish?

Updated

ESA/Webb (esawebb.org) publishes James Webb Space Telescope results and programme news in three main streams: Press Releases, Picture of the Month, and Announcements. Each stream has its own item code — weic for press releases, potm for the monthly image, and ann for announcements — so you can tell at a glance what kind of item you are looking at and roughly when it was published.

Press Releases: new science results

This is the main science news feed. Items cover specific findings from Webb observations, written for a general audience and tied to a release number and date. Examples visible on the site include:

  • "Webb reveals stunning panorama of star formation" — 15 Sept. 2026, weic2619
  • "Webb reveals dust and water surviving in the extreme environment around the Milky Way's central black hole" — 11 Aug. 2026, weic2617
  • "Lion Nebula roars to life for Webb" — 10 Aug. 2026, weic2616
  • "Webb uncovers unusual galaxy shaped by cosmic collision" — 6 July 2026, weic2615

The topics range from star formation and nebulae to galaxies and the environment around the Milky Way's central black hole. A "Explore all Press Releases" link leads to the full archive if you want to browse beyond the most recent items.

Picture of the Month: one image per month

A separate, slower stream that highlights a single striking image each month, with its own potm code:

  • "Galaxies in a cosmic house of mirrors" — 29 Sept. 2026, potm2609
  • "Striking star clusters and irregular clumps" — 27 Aug. 2026, potm2608
  • "Webb opens a Treasure Chest filled with stars" — 6 Aug. 2026, potm2607
  • "A cosmic construction project" — 3 July 2026, potm2606

If you mainly want visual highlights rather than written results, this is the stream to follow.

Announcements: awards, calendars, and recruitment

Programme and community news rather than science results, coded ann:

  • "2026 Royal Astronomical Society Awards recognise contributions to JWST" — 23 July 2026, ann2601
  • "Announcement of the 2026 ESA Hubble and Webb Calendar" — 17 Dec. 2025, ann2501
  • "Announcement of the 2025 ESA Hubble and Webb Calendar" — 12 Dec. 2024, ann2403
  • "Call for ESA/Hubble & ESA/Webb Science Writer" — 1 Aug. 2024, ann2402

This is where institutional news, award recognition, annual calendar releases, and occasional job calls appear.

Other recurring content on the site

Beyond the three coded streams, the site also carries:

  • Space Sparks — a video series
  • ESA/Hubble/Webb Science Newsletter — the most recent listed issue is December 2025
  • Webb's first images release: July 2022 — a fixed reference section for the first image release
  • Social media links under "Follow us on social media"

How to keep up

The site offers a "Subscribe to Webb News" link, which points to the ESA Hubble/Webb subscribe page. That is the direct route if you want new press releases and announcements delivered rather than checking the homepage.

Which stream to use

If you want… Follow
New science findings with context Press Releases (weic)
A single standout image each month Picture of the Month (potm)
Awards, calendars, job calls Announcements (ann)
Video explainers Space Sparks
Periodic roundups ESA/Hubble/Webb Science Newsletter

One practical note: the item codes embed the year and a sequence number (for example, weic2619 is the 19th press release of 2026), which makes it easy to cite or locate a specific item later.
