What SIGIL Is and How to Get It from Rome.ro

Updated

SIGIL is a DOOM level set (an episode) created by John Romero, released as a free download on May 31, 2019, according to his site. You can get it from Rome.ro through the "SIGIL DOWNLOAD" link in his development posts; physical editions (Big Box and Beast Box) were sold separately and shipped to buyers, and SIGIL merchandise is sold on the Romero Games shop site. The free download is the straightforward path if you just want to play it.

What SIGIL actually is

Rome.ro describes SIGIL as a DOOM project that Romero built with a team of "DOOM technicians" who checked the data. The site notes that even though DOOM was 25 years old at the time of the post, every line segment in a level carries a lot of information, and most levels contain hundreds or thousands of line segments — so the technical checking was substantial. The team named in the post includes dew (Boris Klimes), flambeau, UberGewei, and Keyboard_Doomer.

In short: it is new official-style DOOM content from one of the original designers, not a standalone game and not a remake.

Getting the free version

  1. Go to Rome.ro and find the development posts about SIGIL (the December 2, 2019 update is the most detailed).
  2. Use the "SIGIL DOWNLOAD" link in that post. The site states the free version was uploaded on May 31, 2019, and links to it directly.
  3. Expect a version around v1.21. The post says SIGIL was "up to v1.21" at that time and might not see another revision.

The site does not list a price for the download beyond calling it free, and it does not describe login requirements, so treat those details as unconfirmed until you open the link.

Version history and fixes worth knowing

The December 2019 update is useful because it tells you what changed and what state the release is in:

  • v1.21 status: described as "pretty good now," with the possibility that no further revision would come.
  • Gameplay tuning: Romero says he "toned down the crushers on E5M4," a change aimed at complaints about that map.
  • Ongoing fixes: the team coordinated fixes through a Slack channel, with work often starting around midnight.

If you played an early build and found E5M4 frustrating, the current download is the version to try.

Physical editions and merchandise

Two collector packages, the Big Box and the Beast Box, were sold to customers. A February 16, 2019 post warned of production snags and said shipping was looking like sometime in April; a May 15, 2019 post said the parts were together, would be boxed over the weekend, and would ship to customers the following week "Satan willing." If you are trying to buy one now, note that these were limited pre-order runs, not an ongoing store product described on the site.

For apparel and other items, the site points to the Romero Games shop ("ROMERO GAMES SHOP"), where SIGIL merchandise is sold. The site does not list prices or payment details for these items.

Rome.ro is John Romero's official site, focused on game development articles about his games. It suits DOOM fans and people interested in how these classic games were made; it is not a general game store or a download portal for unrelated titles. The blog archive search reaches back to 2002 if you want older development posts.
