What the NSP Forwarder Generator Options Mean (Advanced Mode, Screenshots, Video Capture, Profile Selector, svcDebug)

Updated

The NSP Forwarder Generator turns an NRO file into an installable NSP that appears on your Switch home screen and launches that NRO. Most fields are self-explanatory (title, logo, publisher), but four options sit in the advanced area and are easy to misread: Advanced Mode reveals extra configuration, while Enable screenshots, Enable video capture, Enable profile selector, and Enable svcDebug flag each change how the forwarded app behaves once launched. You need a prod.keys file to generate the NSP at all, regardless of which options you toggle.

The basic fields first

These appear before any advanced options and define what the forwarder looks like and points to:

Field What it does
NRO or image file The NRO you want to forward, or an image used as the logo
Text above logo Label shown above the icon on the home screen
Select logo Icon image for the forwarder
Select startup animation Animation played when the forwarder launches
Version / Title ID Version string and the title ID assigned to the NSP
Random Generates a random Title ID
App Title / Publisher Name and publisher text shown in system menus
NRO Path Path the forwarder uses to locate the NRO on your SD card
Prod Keys Your prod.keys file, required to build the NSP

The generator also offers NRO Forwarder and RetroArch Forwarder presets — the latter pre-fills settings suited to launching RetroArch rather than a single NRO.

What Advanced Mode changes

Advanced Mode is a toggle, not a separate page. Turning it on exposes the additional configuration options below the standard fields — the capture, profile, and debug switches. If you only need a plain icon that launches one NRO, you can leave it off and generate. Turn it on when you want to control how the launched app interacts with the system (captures, profile selection, debug flag).

Enable screenshots

This controls whether the forwarded app is allowed to take screenshots through the system capture function. With it enabled, the launched NRO can capture the screen the way normal titles do. With it disabled, that capture path is not granted to the forwarded app. If you use the forwarder mainly to run homebrew that never captures, leaving it off changes nothing you'd notice; enable it if you expect to grab screenshots from within the forwarded app.

Enable video capture

The same idea applied to video: this grants the forwarded app the ability to record video clips via the system capture feature. Enable it if you want to record gameplay from the forwarded NRO; leave it off if you don't, since it's a permission you're choosing to hand over rather than something the forwarder needs to function.

Enable profile selector

This option relates to choosing a user profile when the forwarder launches. With it enabled, the forwarder prompts for (or respects) profile selection at startup, which matters when save data or user-specific state should be tied to a particular account. With it disabled, the app launches without that profile-selection step. Enable it if the forwarded NRO stores per-user data and you want to pick which user it runs as.

Enable svcDebug flag

This toggles a debug-related service flag on the forwarder. It is a debugging switch, not a normal-use setting — enable it only if you're troubleshooting the forwarder or the NRO it launches and need that debug service available. For everyday use, leave it off.

A quick decision guide

  • Just want an icon that launches an NRO? Fill the basic fields, skip Advanced Mode, generate.
  • Want to screenshot or record from the forwarded app? Enable screenshots and/or video capture.
  • Forwarded app keeps per-user data? Enable profile selector.
  • Debugging a launch problem? Enable svcDebug flag temporarily.
  • Any case: you still need to supply prod.keys before the generator will produce an NSP.

Common sticking points

  • Forgetting prod.keys. The generator needs your prod.keys file; without it, generation won't complete.
  • Confusing the two capture options. Screenshots and video capture are separate permissions — enabling one does not enable the other.
  • Leaving svcDebug on. It's a debug flag; there's no reason to keep it enabled for normal use.
  • Wrong NRO Path. The forwarder launches whatever path you set, so a mismatched path produces a forwarder that installs but fails to start the NRO.
