What the Rankings on the UNS Website Mean

Updated

The UNS website (uns.ac.id) displays six ranking results, each measuring something different: two QS placements (world and Asia), one THE world placement, one THE sustainability placement, two AppliedHE placements (all-Asia and Indonesia), and two UI GreenMetric placements (world and Indonesia). They are not interchangeable scores. Each comes from a different ranking body, uses different criteria, and covers a different pool of universities, so a single "UNS rank" does not exist. Use them as separate signals of reputation, sustainability performance, and national standing.

The rankings as shown on the page

Ranking Position shown Scope What it broadly reflects
QS World University Rankings 951–1000 Global Overall university reputation and performance on QS's international criteria
QS World University Rankings: Asia 168 Asia The same QS approach applied to Asian institutions only
THE World University Ranking 1001–1200 Global Overall performance under Times Higher Education's criteria
THE Sustainability Impact Ratings 101–200 Global Sustainability and impact performance (THE's impact-focused assessment)
AppliedHE Public University Ranking: All Asia 67 Asia (public universities) Standing among public universities in Asia
AppliedHE Public University Ranking: Indonesia 5 Indonesia (public universities) Standing among public universities in Indonesia
UI GreenMetric World Ranking 32 Global Campus sustainability/green metrics
UI GreenMetric Ranking: Indonesia 5 Indonesia Campus sustainability/green metrics within Indonesia

The page presents these as "Reputasi Global UNS." Note that the excerpt labels the THE Sustainability Impact Ratings entry with "2026"; treat the year attached to each figure as the edition it belongs to, and check the page for the current set before citing any number.

Why the numbers cannot be compared directly

A rank of 168 in Asia and a rank of 951–1000 globally are not in tension — they describe different pools. Being 168th among Asian universities can coexist with being in the 951–1000 band worldwide because the global pool is far larger and includes institutions from every region.

The same logic applies across ranking bodies. QS and THE weight research, reputation, and internationalization differently, so their bands will rarely match. AppliedHE restricts its pool to public universities, which changes who you are being compared against. UI GreenMetric measures campus sustainability practices rather than academic reputation, which is why UNS can sit at 32 globally there while appearing much lower in general world rankings.

Practical rule: compare a ranking only with the same ranking in a different year, or with the same ranking applied to a different institution. Do not compare QS World with THE World, or a global band with an Asia or Indonesia position.

Reading the pairs correctly

Three of the rankings appear as world/Indonesia or Asia/Indonesia pairs:

  • AppliedHE: 67 in All Asia and 5 in Indonesia means UNS ranks highly among Indonesian public universities and also places within the top group across Asia's public universities.
  • UI GreenMetric: 32 globally and 5 in Indonesia indicates strong campus sustainability performance that stands out nationally and holds up internationally.

These pairs are useful because they answer different questions: "How does UNS compare nationally?" versus "How does it compare across the region or the world?" A strong national position with a more modest global position is normal and simply reflects the size and composition of each pool.

What the rankings do not tell you

The page shows positions, not the underlying scores, criteria weights, or submission data. It also does not state how often the figures are updated. If you need a ranking for a decision — choosing a program, preparing a comparison, or citing UNS in a document — go to the original ranking body's site for the edition year, methodology, and full indicator breakdown, and confirm the figure still matches what uns.ac.id displays.

For questions about what UNS offers rather than how it is ranked, the site's "PROGRAM STUDI" section is the relevant entry point; rankings describe institutional standing, not specific study programs.
